| Gershwin meets the Beach Boys As a long-time Beach Boys fan, and also as a serious jazz afficionado, I had some high expectations for the CD. Brian Wilson exceeded them. This is the most imaginative approach to Gershwin that I have heard. Wilson made the songs his own, in a very enjoyable way. You would have thought Gershwin attended Hawthorne High. Excellent work! | Gershwin Surfin' Reimagines Gershwin buy CD music A not entirely expected delight, given the song list and concern that his old larynx may be not be up to it. It is. His vocals are better than they've been on recent outings, and here and there he even hits a few high notes. Who'd have thought Gershwin lends himself to Beach Boys arrangements of the Help Me Rhonda/Pet Sounds era! The only problem, as usual with his solo career, is that the background vocalists, although competent, are not successful in their obvious effort to convey the other four Beach Boys, except perhaps on track 13 when one of the guys makes the listener almost believe Mike Love is in the studio. Selecting "I Loves You, Porgy" to sing (and pull off), BW demonstrates he is as weird as ever. In this instance it's good some things never change. Somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, and hall of famers always get the benefit of the doubt. By garya (goshen ny usa) This review is for a different format. |
