30 Country Gospel Favorites songs For a group that has reportedly sold 37 million recordings, precious few of the Chuck Wagon Gang's classic Columbia recordings have been reissued on CD. Music Mill remedies that situation with Looking for a City, a budget collection containing ten cuts from 1936-1966. The Chuck Wagon Gang's country gospel sound is plain and unadorned, performed by the vocal quartet with a simple guitar for accompaniment; there are no instrumental breaks and none of the modulation or vocal histrionics heard in black gospel. More similar in style to the Brown's Ferry Four than the Carter Family, the Chuck Wagon Gang were conservative with their sound to such a degree that when "Lord, Lead Me Home," from 1966, follows "The Church in the Wildwood," recorded in 1936, the transition is seamless. The songs are mostly well-known ones, including several Albert E. Brumley hymns. Only one of these songs was included on the 1985 anthology Columbia Historic Edition, which has yet to appear on CD. Looking for a City was released in tandem with I'll Fly Away, a similar collection that does not overlap. ~ Greg Adams
