Old fashioned it may be, but this movie ticks all the boxes for me. Fantastic music, great acting. Liz Taylor at her most beautiful.

||Liz, Vittorio, and Claudio Arrau|
Rhapsody movie A not infrequent situation where a beautiful woman, with nothing else to do in life but being a woman in the 1950s, and wealthy at that, finds herself confronted with circumstances whereby she has to choose between two attractive male classical soloists utterly devoted to their respective musical vocations. The one she loves loves his violin endeavours first. The one who loves her first, a student pianist, gets unrecognized. So much for story telling the Henry Handel Richardsonís way, as mediated by film director Charles Vidor. No doubt seeing a very young Liz and a very young Vittorio on the screen has a thrilling attraction of its own. But my interest also extends elsewhere. The piano part of the sound track was played by Claudio Arrau, whose centenary year is 2003. In the film there are excerpts from piano pieces by Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann, as well as a very short excerpt of a duo arrangement for violin and piano of a passage of the Tchaikovskyís violin concerto. But, above all, there are three excerpts of Scriabinís Etude No.12, Op 8, and several excerpts of Rachmaninovís Piano Concerto No.2, which Arrau never recorded anywhere else! These recordings are the only existing records of Arrau ever playing Scriabin and Rachmaninov! There are also segments of a jazz piano improvisation and of a popular dancing waltz. Were these excerpts also played by Arrau? The name of the orchestra conducted by Johnny Green needs be properly credited. I suggest a digitally enhanced DVD be released of this film, containing a special additional feature devoted to Arrauís piano recordings for the film, with musical items duly identified, including any discarded segments or extended versions beyond what can be heard in the film, particularly regarding Scriabin and Rachmaninov. Needless to say in our times, such a suggested DVD should contain subtitling in the most relevant languages other than English (not a common occurrence in MGM DVD releases). Thank you and best wishes.
