Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). ...See Full Description

Excellent Even better than the Home Video version. Much better sound and color and scenery. All the scenery is included. Nothing is left out. By dcobrothers (Portland, CT.) This review is for a different format.
Fabulous Remake of a classic! But? I received this has a gift because it's my favorite musical of all time. And I was waiting for the new digital remake. But I was dissapointed because they left out three scenes from the original movie. When Captain VonTrapp has has his get together and the children do their presentation of Cuckoo for the guest. And in the den when the children do the puppet presentation. I know they were making a big presentaion on this digitally remastered THX editon. But I think they should have kept the original movie intact. Also, if you notice that when it's aired on television. It's now done on one night, instead of two nights? Because those scenes were deleted as well. Why? Still a fabulous move! By halfmoondude (San Diego, CA) This review is for a different format.
Excellent picture quality The story is well known, but here on dvd on HD tv or computer, the quality of the pictures is excellent. Worth watching even if only to look at the scenery. By lchene (Quebec, ca) This review is for a different format.
Great It was great having the whole movie on dvd. We have watched the movie on VHS for so many years. It was great. By kmordorski (Saint Paul, MN, USA) This review is for a different format.
What a movie... Can you believe that the entire movie is on one CD (considering two VHS tapes hold this movie). I watched it today and thoroughly enjoyed seeing it again -- and in widescreen at that. By a reviewer (Los Angeles, CA) This review is for a different format.
