Hasten Down the Wind CD (1976) Top Seller
Linda Ronstadt/Heart Like a Wheel songs Ronstadt delves into Spanish territory with "Lo Siento Mi Vida," a beautiful acoustic number. The title track is a ballad written by Warren Zevon and features fellow Californian Don Henley on harmony vocals. Ronstadt goes the Jamaican route with "Give One Heart," a reggae love song. Linda does a powerful and searing rendition of Patsy Cline's "Crazy," as her soprano sheds new light on an old classic. Ronstadt has explored many musical styles in her career, and HASTEN is no exception, as country, rock, pop, Spanish music and reggae come together to form a winner.
HASTEN DOWN THE WIND was a number three smash and Ronstadt's first million- selling disc. It also garnered her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It's a very real, raw album with Ronstadt's sweet vocals pierced by a touch of grit. "Lose Again" is a country rock ballad written by Karla Bonoff. Linda decides it's time to rock out with a kickin' version of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day."

Mason Proffit Wanted! Mason Proffitt CD (1969) Top Seller
Linda Ronstadt/Heart Like a Wheel album for sale "Hear the voice of change," command the Talbot brothers at the opening of their debut album, and the song, "Voice of Change," is both a political statement calling out to President Nixon's "silent majority" and a statement of purpose from the band. Like their peers on the West Coast, the Midwestern Talbots attempt to merge the musical and social concerns of the folk-rock movement with elements of traditional country. But they are a bit more Western-styled than the Flying Burrito Brothers and less of a good-time outfit than Poco. Forging a connection between the hippie ethos and the Old West's outlaw myth, they conjure up a portrait of long-haired cowboys riding across the plain. In "Two Hangmen," the brothers alternate vocals (and stereo speakers) to tell the odd tale of an executioner who comes to doubt his profession and is sentenced to death for it, only to be spared by a second executioner, the two then hung to preserve the status quo. It's a bizarre Western fable, to be sure, but one that illustrates the brothers' sense that they are trying to invent a new society within the terms of the old and may have to pay for it. (Wanted!, after all, is a title that cuts at least two ways.) The music takes off from folk and country sources into progressive rock ("Sweet Lady Love" is even reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival), the pedal steel guitar and fiddle augmented here and there by strings, while the brothers' tenor harmonies give the group a distinctive vocal sound. Like many debut albums, this one is ambitious, both musically and thematically; Mason Proffit want to change musical tastes and political beliefs at the same time. Whether or not they succeed, they have crafted a good opening argument. ~ William Ruhlmann

Prisoner in Disguise CD (1975)
Linda Ronstadt/Heart Like a Wheel buy CD music After the chart-topping success of HEART LIKE A WHEEL, Linda Ronstadt released PRISONER IN DISGUISE in 1975, an extremely successful follow-up effort which bolstered her standing as one of America's most popular singers. Opting not to fiddle with a formula that was working, Ronstadt delivered another collection of well-crafted, carefully arranged rock, pop and country songs that showed off her talent for covering good tunes and rendering them in a way that allowed the melodies to soar on the strength of her graceful voice.
The album yielded two strong singles: an exuberant version of the Motown classic "Heat Wave" and a silky-smooth rendition of Smokey Robinson's "Ooh Baby Baby," featuring lyrical alto saxophone touches by veteran session man David Sanborn. Ms. Ronstadt makes great use of the poignant ache in her voice on elegaic ballads like James Taylor's "Hey Mister, That's Me Up on the Jukebox" and Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which she sings with considerably less vocal histrionics than Whitney Houston would in her remake of the tune some 20 years later.
Also available with "Simple Dreams" on 1 cassette.

Simple Dreams CD (1977) Top Seller
Linda Ronstadt/Heart Like a Wheel album for sale This was the fourth in a series of hit albums Linda Ronstadt made in the mid-seventies, starting with HEART LIKE A WHEEL. Like its predecessors, SIMPLE DREAMS is a rich collection of pensive folk ballads, pop with country leanings, and good old rock & roll. Her skill in navigating this rootsy terrain is exemplary, taking her from the swagger of her cover of The Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" to the sweet whisperings of the acoustic "Maybe I'm Right." This record also features some of her most enduringly popular hits, such as "Blue Bayou" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."
The rousing opening track, Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" featuring her trademark growl, along with "Tumbling Dice" and the playful "Poor Poor Pititul Me," give the record moments of electrifying energy. It's the ballads, however, that comprise the majority of the tunes. Included are two traditional songs, "I Never Will Marry" (featuring Dolly Parton) and "Old Paint," both given simple but lovely arrangements by Ronstadt herself. The melodramatic "Sorrow Lives Here" is almost a hint of what is to come in the form of her collaborations with Nelson Riddle. Her artistry is perhaps best demonstrated in "Blue Bayou;" the shift from the quiet and husky verse to the yearning wail that is the chorus is nothing short of breathtaking.
Also available with PRISONER IN DISGUISE on 1 cassette.

Bill Kirchen Word to the Wise CD (2010) Top Seller
Linda Ronstadt/Heart Like a Wheel CD music If a guest list of marquee names is what it takes to finally bring Bill Kirchen the attention he deserves, then so be it. This Telecaster master has never made an album that's less than outstanding, but hopefully the presence of Elvis Costello, Dan Hicks, Nick Lowe, Maria Muldaur, the late Norton Buffalo, Paul Carrack, and others on Word to the Wise will do the trick. Kirchen began his career as lead guitarist for Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen in the '70s, and the ol' Commander himself, George Frayne, returns to engage in some fancy boogie-woogie ivory tickling on "I Don't Work That Cheap," a Kirchen original (co-written by guitarist/vocalist Blackie Farrell, who also guests) that posits an alternate universe historical travelog. Costello's star turn comes in the blues-infused "Man in the Bottom of the Well," and it's one of the more riveting vocals he's laid down in some time. Dan Hicks co-wrote and co-sings the title track with Kirchen, and it could easily have been a prime-era Hot Licks staple. Chris O'Connell, former Asleep at the Wheel vocalist, engages in a weepy duet with Kirchen on Roger Miller's "Husbands and Wives," Muldaur's trademark bawdy blues style lights up the barroom shuffle "Ain't Got No Time for the Blues," and Lowe and Carrack team up Everly Brothers-style on "Shelly's Winter Love," borrowed from the Merle Haggard songbook. The set ends on a semi-sad note with Kirchen's "Valley of the Moon," not because there's anything gloomy about the song itself, but because it's one of the last times the always-stellar harmonica of Norton Buffalo would be heard in a recording studio. So much for the guests -- what about the host? As always, Kirchen's guitar work is faultless. He's a player who always knows exactly what to play when, never overstays his welcome, enjoys the element of surprise, and keeps things invitingly simple and clean. As a vocalist, he's never going to be Sinatra, but he embraces his material and delivers it with panache and assuredness, just as he's done for the past four decades, and that's more than good enough. A word to the wise: if you've yet to fall prey to the proto-Americana charms of Bill Kirchen, this is as good a place to start as any. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
Personnel: Bill Kirchen (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, baritone guitar); Austin DeLone (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, electric piano, organ); Dan Hicks, Blackie Farrell (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jack O'Dell (vocals, drums); Chris O'Connell, Nick Lowe, Paul Carrack, Elvis Costello, Maria Muldaur (vocals); Peter Bonta (mandolin, accordion); Norton Buffalo (harmonica); Commander Cody (piano); Paul Riley (bass guitar, background vocals); Lisa Best, Bucky Lindsey, Louise Kirchen (background vocals).
