Malcolm X review Product Description
The biopic of the controversial and influential Black Nationalist. Includes a book and a disc of bonus material. Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, Albert Hall, Al Freeman, Jr., and Delroy Lindo star in this Spike Lee film.
The controversial chronicle of the life of spiritual and political leader, Malcolm X, assassinated at age 39 by black extremists, this well-made, epic film is directed by African-American auteur Spike Lee, garnering an Academy Award nomination for Denzel Washington as the charismatic leader.
Spike Lee brings the life of African-American leader Malcolm X (an intense Denzel Washington in an Oscar-nominated performance) to the big screen in this sprawling, epic biographical drama. Born Malcolm Little, son of a Nebraska preacher, on May 19, 1925, he became one of the most militant leaders and charismatic spokesmen of the black liberation movement before his assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965. The film sweeps through his early life as a small-time hustler and thief with his friend Shorty (Lee), his conversion to Islam in jail, and his subsequent life as a controversial spiritual leader and husband of Betty Shabazz (Angela Bassett). ...See Full Description

| Denzel Washington's best performance Denzel Washington won Oscars for both Glory and Training Day, but he should have won for his performance in Malcolm X. Under Spike Lees direction Denzel transforms Malcolm from a zoot-suited clown to a hardened street thug into the world respected Malcolm X. Despite some alterations to history for dramatic effect (Malcolm and West Indian Archies showdown with guns - it was actually very mild, washing the "conk" out of his hair in the toilet just before his arrest - it actually happened before he left New York, and other minor incidents) this is a very good presentation of Malcolm X's life. | Washington's Best Job! I don't think Denzel Washington will ever turn in a performance like this one. He just didn't act, he became the man! Spike produced a classic. By a reviewer (Charlotte NC, USA) This review is for a different format. |
