The first-half is vintage
This Hill session, previously quite hard to find, is well worth the purchase. The first three songs are among Hill's catchiest. "Yellow Violet" offers a lovely melody perfectly articulated through Farrell's soprano sax, while Fish'N'Rice is Hill's best attempt to create a "funky" Blue Note style track (Andrew Hill funky, not Lee Morgan funky). The second half of the album is still good, but the compositions are thornier without offering all that many compelling musical ideas. The playing throughout is at a very high level, and on tracks like Fish'N'Rice surpasses that to reach a unified groove and grace only found on the best albums.
