Where to begin?
MGMT gained fame when their album Oracular Spectacular dropped. The hooky synth-lines and danceable beats of that album made for a good collection of songs that many could enjoy. But with Congratulations, MGMT focused on creating a solid entire album, rather than stringing together radio-ready singles on a CD. Does it work? I think so, but those who fell in love with MGMT for the hooks and the pop sensibilities might be let down. This album will cater to those who like a little experimentation with their songs. As far as music, if new alternative rock were mixed with, dare I say, progressive/acid rock and a dash of 60's Motown, the result would probably be this album. It still sounds like MGMT, but perhaps they grew up. A solid effort, but if you're not sure, the band is (at the time of this writing) allowing for fans to stream the entire album on their website. Check it there before purchasing, but I do recommend making the purchase. 4/5

A very trippy And rewarding experience
Well, first off, this album wasn't meant to please everyone but rather to reward those who spent their time an trust in the band during the latest outting. I don't recommend listen to this album anticipating fantastic hooks, but rather put on as background music when your relaxing and let yourself your own hooks. Then listen to it more in depth. Very rewarding upon repeat listens

you ever hear that expression...
...that a band as their whole life to write their 1st LP, then only months to write their 2nd? well, that certainly seems to be the case here. but i guess this really isn't their 2nd LP officially, but, Congratulations, it certainly has sophmore jinx written all over it. so, the lead off track is not bad, but the rest is somewhat forgetable atmospheric rock, in the vein of The Flaming Lips, just not anywhere as good unfortunately. Its releases like this where you appreciate being to buy single tracks. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I'm guessing these guys will come up with something more memorable next time around, especially since they had that one killer tune from last year.

Let down
This was somewhat expected...following up on some of their jams was gonna be tough seeing that "Electric Feel", "Kids" and some of others were written and perfected over 5 years before their album finally dropped into the mainstream scene. Not one feel good jam on this whole album....They should drop their Climbing New Lows album. Would have had a better effect in today's market.

Amazing album!
Although there are only 9 songs on the album, each song in itself is like a couple songs put together. The amount of diversity in each song is incredible. Sure, there aren't any radio-ready jams on Congratulations, but there doesn't need to be. This album blew my mind and continues to do so every time I listen to it. For those of you who don't like it, try closing your eyes and imagining things while listening... or do some drugs. You'll love it for sure if you have any taste in music at all.
