First Solo Attempt
This is a nice enough, innocuous, little “singer/songwriter” initial attempt, but the record is more of a novelty item than anything else. I refer to the fact that when it was first released on the small local/independent label, it was mastered at the wrong speed, making the vocals sound higher pitched than what they already were. I have a copy of that original vinyl, and as I recall it doesn’t sound as bad as the stories would lead you to believe – in other words it doesn’t sound like the "Chipmunks" doing Billy Joel. As I recall, the other part of the sob story was that Joel’s manager, or management company, at the time was a big time crook in terms of taking Joel to the cleaners from a financial standpoint. But that wasn’t unusual for the time, as apparently most artists of the day didn’t know what an “attorney” was and didn’t know they needed legal protection. But back to the music – I guess the big song on the album was the first cut – She’s Got a Way, which actually didn’t even become a hit until several years afterwards when it was re-released on a later Columbia compilation or maybe it was a live album.

Cold Spring Harbour
This is a brilliant album that is a great addition for anyone who owns his Greatest Hits Vols I and II. I believe that none of the songs from this album made the greatest hits album, yet there are some classic tracks from his early days.

"Cold Spring Harbor" isn't anywhere near as great as most of Joel's following albums, but it is still really nice on the ears, though Joel's vocals are a bit high and detached from the rest of the production. Joel has a much drier and simplified ensemble than his following albums contain, and the lyrics and music feel a bit monotonous, but it's still rich enough to be a solid rock/pop album. I like this one a lot. 3.5/5 stars

Billy Joel's best album
I've been a Billy Joel fan for over 10 years now, and during all this time of collecting his albums, I've never found any one better than the obscure COLD SPRING HARBOR album. There aren't many "hits" on this album, but that doesn't detract from the amazing quality and diversity of the songs. "Got To Begin Again", "Tomorrow is Today", and "Why Judy Why" are my personal favorites. In my opinion, Billy Joel is at his best with softer piano ballads and this album offers the best here.
