Listen for Yourself
One of the most amazing albums/cds ever made - light years ahead of its time. All three gentlemen of ELP, and Keith Emerson in particular, hit their creative and performance peaks on this recording. Released in 1973, Karn Evil 9's lyrics and music predict the coldness and inhumanity of the computer age, and the grotesque distractions that man cannot see beyond. It tells of a day when man can no longer manage the "monster" that he has created and can no longer control. Of the songs not titled Karn Evil 9, there is Jerusalem (poetry by William Blake put to classical influenced rock music), Tocatta (an adaptation of a piece by Ginestera, which includes a remarkable percussive section that, to my knowledge, includes the first electronic drums recorded on album), the ballad-like song of longing and rememberence Still... You Turn Me On, and the honky tonkish, bar brawl that is Benny the Bouncer. The music is far from subliminal - its very much in your face, the excesses of youth taking center stage. There is very little empty space on this album - lots of notes, lots of music. this is not kindergarden rock and roll like Kiss or Ratt, its not glam or disco, and it ain't Indie-pop. Its Progressive Rock, and if you don't want to actively listen and pay attention to this music, I cannot recommend this album to you. If you can appreciate 3 very talented guys playing their hearts out and who really hit their stride, this may hold some interest for you. If you don't know the music take the chance on it, if you are familiar with ELP, you know what I'm talking about!

Emerson, Lake and Palmer's finest work
This was my favorite album of all time (until I heard "...And Then There Were Three..."). Most definitely a sheer masterpiece.

ELP on K2HD rocks!
I was first exposed to Emerson, Lake and Palmer - and "Brain Salad Surgery" - back in high school when the title was released in 1973. I have loved listening to the album for many years, and have enjoyed the original Atlantic release (19124-2) for a long time. This was the first K2HD title I have purchased, and I am now a firm believer in the K2HD remastering technology. When I first listened to this version of the album, it honestly sounded to me as though I was actually sitting in the recording studio listening to ELP lay down the tracks live. The recording is so clear that I am hearing song elements that I have never heard before, providing me with an all-new experience with this enduring music masterpiece. For example, with the Atlantic version, I always found myself skipping over the section of "Toccata" containing the Tympani solo, simply because the drum work sounded muddy and undefined to me. Not so with the K2HD version, as every percussive stroke sounds clear and clean. The same holds for the entirety of the CD, with bass tones coming through with a clarity I haven't previously heard. Also, for those who are interested in replica album cover work, the K2HD version faithfully reproduces that of the vinyl version. So, if you're a fan of the original, I can't recommend this version of "Brain Salad Surgery" any more highly. I now look forward to receiving my next K2HD CD, "Adventures in Utopia," which should be arriving this week. Thank you to CD Universe for exposing me to a new remixing technology that I didn't even know existed!
