Not bad, has been compressed, dubious musical value
Comparing waveforms (on his own site, quickly deleted by censors) shows that Hoffman used compression on this remastering, or that the compression was on whatever digital copy he mastered from. It doesn't sound bad, but the advertising claims are flat out false. Not a great Doors album, this one is an oddity at best, a failed experiment with a few good songs and the rest..well...

Compression on Audio Fidelity CDs
The original mixes are compressed on the Steve Hoffman mastered CD. Regardless of ones opinion of the sound, these CDs should not reveal compression beyond that used during mixing. The 1988 Elektra CD reveals that the original mixes are available without the compression that is found on the AF CD. Since AF states they are using the original master tapes and that they are not adding compression in anyway, there should not be more compression on their release. If anything, copy tapes would have more compression than master tapes. For instance, if the 1988 CD was made from a copy and the AF was made from the master, the AF should have the same, or greater dynamic range. Oddly, the 40th anniversary remixes do not reveal the compression that has been applied to the original mixes. I do not agree that HDCD makes this better than the unreleased DCC master. That master has the dynamics in it that this one should have. HDCD drops the level -6db. Peak extension is not enabled on any AF HDCD thus far, so there is no gain in dynamic range there. I'm one of the guys that put up waveforms showing the compression on I got soft banned for showing the clipped peaks on the AF Rod Stewart - Never A Dull Moment (My account wasn't banned, but I can't do anything if I log in). Contact "Dream Operator" on IMWAN for more information.

A very eclectic Album
I heard this album in Vynil many years ago, and believe is the most experimental effort of the band. It is very clear the difference between the several tracks in style, especially due to the use of strings and horns, but also with the apportations from jazz, country and latin influences. This will not satisfy any listener, since is not the "classical" style of the group, but for a Doors fan this record is a must. The booklet is complete with historical note, Lyrics and many photos, and the sound quality is also fair.

Very Popish
With the exception of the title track,This album is the weakest of all the Doors studio efforts. There are some good moments but for the most part it is too poppy. Jim's vocals are as sharp as ever but the songs themselves are rather ho hum and lack intensity. A good album nonetheless but not up to Doors standards in my humble opinion.
