| Psychedelic Snapshot This first album from Country Joe is a wonderful snapshot of the psychedelic San Francisco music scene from 1967. The music is varied from quirky instrumentals (Section 43) to love songs that could never have been released at any other time (Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine). McDonald's songwriting influences came from Kurt Weill & electric blues & everyone inbetween. Truly an effort by the entire band, David Cohen's electric organ (Farfisa??Vox??)is complemented by Barry Melton's distorted Gibson SG. He solos throughout most songs. The only disappointment here is the liner notes--they're virtually non-existant. By krech (Mifflinburg, PA) This review is for a different format. |
| LSD Music without having to take it. . . Buy this CD (the '67 vinyl pressing is far better); sit down after hitting play- fade in between the chords and trippy walk-about music. By sm (wallingford, CT, USA) This review is for a different format. |
| Musical bliss from 1967 : does time pass that slowly ? A beautiful mix of numbers showcasing the group's musical mastery as well as their wide range of perfectly integrated influences. Joe McDonald's voice is ideally suited to the material (he sings lead on a majority of the tracks, which he wrote or co-wrote). Tuneful, diverse and delightful, this album holds proudly its own when compared to any significant "psychedelic" album from the late sixties, and then some. Although a remaster by Rhino or Sundazed would have improved the sonics, it has to be said that this fairly early (1990) Vanguard CD reissue sounds mighty fine, with lots of details coming through (from the delicate chimes to the well-defined electric bass. ) Just listen to "Grace" Wow !!! | Great, great music This first album from Country Joe & The Fish is also the best work the group ever did. This may well be the best "acid rock" record of all. Great songwriting and fantastic playing by all, with Barry Melton guitar solo's (short) and nice David Cohen organ playing. They didnt last long together, but this disc is a most wonderful and somewhat underrated classic. By Mike (Phila. Pa.) This review is for a different format. |
| CLASSIC! This is actually one of the best records coming out of the classic San Franciscosound. There is Blues , pop, rock and pure psychadelia. Buy this one, it is truly a trip. . By marrakesh (Halmstad, Sweden) This review is for a different format. |
