Bad Timing
They say timing is everything. In 1986, the world was ready to experience African music over a New York pop/doo wop sensibility and we had "Graceland" That album won album of the year.3 years earlier, many of the same themes of love, loss and growth were explored by the same voice. This time without a world beat backdrop. This was "Hearts and Bones" The difference between the two is on a par with the Beatles "Let It Be" vs the bootlegged "Get Back" album. One had Phil Spector and one didn't. "Hearts and Bones" is "Graceland" without the world music. It is nonetheless one of Paul Simon's finest and well worth discovering. In the era of "Flashdance", this one got lost in the shuffle. Just bad timing.

A great, underrated album from a great songwriter
I have to agree with most everyone here about the "shadowiness" of this album, and the fact that it wasn't as popular as some of his other stuff. However, one thing that I think we all missed was that this album was released at a time when Paul was in a bit of a slump, commercially and artistically. People were going to assume that his next album would only accentuate the slump, and when nothing on the album was drastically different from his previous stuff, this prejudice kept them from exploring the wonders on this album. And boy, there are wonders: with the plucked-heartstrings of the title track, the pop sensibility of songs like "Cars Are Cars" and "Allergies" with some great songwriting on "Think Too Much (the version on the original Side 1 of the LP)" and "Train In The Distance" Here, Paul went all-out, maybe in an attempt to be artistic, maybe in an attempt to revive his career, but for whatever the reason, he made an album that is hauntingly enchanting, making it literally a "shadow" album. Utterly amazing.

A bit monotonous
Overall, the album sounds good, but a little repetitive. Maybe because the synthesizer sounds are now dated. Anyway, I like all the songs, especially "The Late Great Johnny Ace", with its references to The Beatles (my all-time favorite group) and John Lennon's murder, which gives poignancy to the song. I also like the fifties feeling of "Rene Magritte... with the Dog After the War"(this title is a little too long). For me these are the two standouts. But in general, the album sounds rather good.

Big Difference between Hearts& / Graceland!
big dif. thanks to me. Hello! I was so surprised that someone like Paul Simon would write about boring things like allergies. He was so lost. I met him in 1983 in the Brill Building cuz i was working on a Lorne Michaels show "The NEW SHOW" which Paul S. also appeared on. When the show was cancelled, Paul focused on me and my career each week. I played him my cassette of Gumboots 1,2,4 + Ladysmith cuz I wanted to do Accordion music (i'm a Norwegian, raised on it) He broke his promises and cheated all of us. Took all my ideas, didn't share a dime. I helped him for 2 years to get away from those drippy jazz chords -- he did. but when it was time to record me, to do my accordion album, he went to South Africa + Zydeco +Los Lobos. ** btw: He deleted Art Garfunkel from "Hearts and Bones" Maybe it would have been better if that had been left alone. unErased. -- Heidi Berg.

PAULS' 'SHADOW-ALBUM"
Music lovers who 'get' this album are usually quite obsessed with it. I am one of them. This remastering captures the 'air' of the original vinyl quite well. I think its' magic, beyond the great lyrics, is the co-existing sense of time standing still for a crystal moment, and a gentle tidal surge moving it forward. TRAIN IN THE DISTANCE probably captures the essence of Pauls genius more than any other single song.
