At Carnegie Hall album for sale Product Description
At Carnegie Hall album for sale by John Coltrane / Thelonious Monk / Thelonious Quartet Monk was released Feb 15, 2011 on the Mosaic label. On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. At Carnegie Hall CD music contains a single disc. ...See Full Description

Two masters at the top of their form At Carnegie Hall buy CD music Both jazz fans and future jazz fans should be so grateful for the discovery of this recording. Forget the fact that this is two of the jazz masters of all time at the top of their game captured just as their music was to make a dramatic change -- this album is just plain, old fashioned great listening. Buy it, buy it, buy it! By JFARRIS7 (Austin, TX, USA) This review is for a different format.
Tremendous Find A seminal recording of two jazz masters that should be on anyone's desert island discs list. By eporres (New York, NY, USA) This review is for a different format.
A GREAT DISCOVERY: MONK AND COLTRANE AT THERE BEST The discovery of Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane performing at Carnegie Hall has to go down as one of the greatest finds in the history of American music. Both musicians are in great form and the ensemble works wonders together. This is a must have CD in any serious listener. By mwalimu147 (Crete. Illinois) This review is for a different format.
Historic Collaboration At Carnegie Hall songs This CD documents Monk at his height and Trane on the way up. It's fun to hear how each influenced the other. Good to hear more from the infrequently heard Malik and Wilson. For a 50 year old live concert recording, the sound is great. Finally we get something for our tax dollars (originally a Voice of America broadcast). By larrylevy (Dallas, TX, USA) This review is for a different format.
| Welcome discovery. At Carnegie Hall album for sale It is great that after all these years, a 1957 recording can still be discovered, and in excellent shape. Playing is excellent, and songs - all by Monk - are classics. Line note writers (6!) have gone overboard, particularly Stanley Crouch. [ Why record companies go back to him, I don't know. ] Not essential, not a masterpiece, but this is an excellent disc and a nice addition to any Monk or Coltrane collection.
