| The Mikado in transition. This transition of The Mikado from film or VCR to DVD is a total DVD fiasco. The colors are dull and the sound horrific. My anticipation of receiving the DVD version was a complete let down. What went wrong? The VCR version is total film gratification. It's "loverly". | A classic A couple of the songs are relocated or reallocated, and the finale is cut mercilessly, but all-in-all this film is a very pleasant surprise. The colour is amazing for a 1939 film, and good by any standards. The D'Oyly Carte company present admirable singing and flawless diction. The highlight is seeing the great Martyn Green as Ko-Ko, especially in the "Here's a How-de-do". See it and enjoy. By Thomas (Mandurang, Vic, Australia) This review is for a different format. |
| CLASSIC MIKADO FILM NOW ON DVD THE MIKADO has always been one of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. Along with the usual absurd but ingenious plot, this work offers some of Gilbert's best dialogue and lyrics, matched by Sullivan's uflagging melodic invention. This 1938 British film version in Technicolor is notable for its beautiful sets and costumes, not to mention the inspired playing of Martyn Green and his fellow Savoyards. Two Americans were also involved, pop singer Kenny Baker and director Victor Schertzinger. Baker was a stiff actor but compensated with a fine tenor voice, while Schertzinger's cinematic style raised the film far above the level of a photographed stage musical. Contrary to the DVD blurb, several songs were omitted from this adaptation, which removes it from any consideration as a "definitive" production, but it is still a wonderfully entertaining film and very much worth seeing.
