Andrew Hill Does It Again
Time Lines buy CD music Andrew Hill's "Time Line" is yet another great disc from a guy who has been experiencing a resurgence in recent years. First "Dusk", then "A Beautiful Day", and now this one. This quintet album features Hill's typically angular and intricate compositions. Over an hour of absorbing music, not a dull moment. Sometimes, as on the title track and "Ry Round 2", the themes are so sparse that they serve as mere guidelines for the group to take off from. The mood is introspective and intelligent but with plenty of emotion. Hill's piano solos have a feeling of reflection and meditation, sounding like a man sharing his experience and wisdom. And the band is right there with him, Charles Tolliver thoughtful and probing on trumpet and Greg Tardy more extroverted in his emotions than the others. Andrew Hill may be a senior citizen but he has more creativity and energy than most musicians half his age. This disc has got to be heard!
