| super CD! A real treat, the re-master is great! The bonus tracks are really good, but seem a bit out of place on 'Roses'- how about reissuing 'Evangeline' on CD?! By a reviewer (Texas) This review is for a different format. |
| GREAT bluegrass~ "I'll go steppin', too" is my all-time favorite bluegrass cut. Ricky outBennies Benny Martin on the fiddle; Albert Lee matches Tony Rice (no small feat) and Jerry's Dobro chorus & fill are my all time faves. oh... yeah...everything else is wonderful! | Middle-of-the-Road Album Emmylou Harris' album "Roses in the Snow" is still a mediocre affair. As always it's a matter of personal taste, but I still prefer the sound of her earlier albums, most of which were recorded in a straight countryrock vein as well as her latest albums, where she's been experimenting with new sounds and producers at the risk of losing her original fan base. The album hasn't really improved with age, but the closing cut (one of two bonus tracks) is a big surprise and shows that Harris handles Irish/Celtic music effortlessly. As with all her albums the musicianship is topnotch. The bluegrass influence of singer/songwriter Ricky Skaggs is felt everywhere and though I respect and admire his virtuosity on mandolin, fiddle and acoustic guitar he's not exactly the greatest harmonysinger in modern country music. But when Emmylou Harris releases an average album she's still better than most of the competition in field of country music, and that must count for something!
