Katy Lied album for sale Product Description

Katy Lied album for sale by Steely Dan was released Oct 18, 2011 on the Universal Distribution label. In 1975 after an extraordinarily successful run of releases which culminated in that "steely" masterpiece, PRETZEL LOGIC, the Dan shifted direction a bit and opened their music up on KATY LIED. The sound is warmer, the already sophisticated harmonies somewhat richer, a little bit closer to combo jazz Katy Lied CD music. It's as if jazz pianist Bill Evans collaborated with Bob Dylan. KATY LIED contains Steely Dan's most emotional, even passionate music up to that point, matched only by the brilliant AJA a few years later. Katy Lied CD music contains a single disc.   ...See Full Description

Blast from the past
I had not heard this CD for several years, and it blew me away. I had forgotten just how good it was. This is the one where they finally seemed to be getting it together as a band. This would be a very good addition to any onew collection of just plain great classics. Excellent!

Still The One!
Steely Dan's hall of fame statis is secure, regardless of what I could say; however, this, the 1st I actually owned, does deserve special recognition. From the wonderfully unrelated cover to the great songs, it still awes me. Even though 'Black Friday', 'Bad Sneakers' and 'Dr. Woo' were top 40 hits and are now considered AOR radio classics, 'Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More' reigns as one of my top 20 or 30 songs ever. 'Ya gotta luv da Dan. Man, were they good!"

The Dan at their cryptic best
This album is a showcase for Fagen and Becker's intriguing and puzzling lyrics, and represents the Dan at their most sly and indirectly cynical (compared with their next, Royal Scam, which is much more direct in its attacks and sarcasm). It is also a fine musical work too, and in my view far better than the overrated Pretzel Logic, which lacks overall coherence and lastability. 'Bad Sneakers' is one of the prototype Dan songs; lyrics that fascinate you forever and complex musical shifts that both unsettle and soothe. Perhaps the defining moment is reached with 'Katy Lied' - one of the Dan's most impenetrable songs lyrically "are you with me Dr Wu? are you really just a shadow ... ?" As you listen to these songs, you find yourself wondering if this is good for your health, as they seep into your psyche and force you to see the world through Fagen and Becker's wonderfully twisted minds. But the music just drugs you into submission, and you give in. One of their best. Should be in anyone's collection.

This really started the recognition of session musicians. Michael McDonald, David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro are among the A-list of new generation of musicians. The late great Porcaro played on all tracks except "Any World" who was played by an original session drummer Hal Blaine.
