Paradiso Product Description
Paradiso by Hayley Westenra was released Jul 19, 2011 on the Decca label. A decade on from her New Zealand-only self-titled debut album, and Christchurch's finest, 23-year-old Hayley Westenra, can no longer rely on the angelic-looking choirgirl persona which helped her replace Charlotte Church as the world's most successful young soprano. But having achieved quite the coup by recruiting legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone for her fifth album (and first non-seasonal studio release since 2007's Treasure), Paradiso, it's unlikely that she would have had to, anyway. ...See Full Description

| Hayley Westenra and Gustav Mahler I was thrilled to hear Hayley Westenra's Celtic Treasure album a few years ago. So I wasn't surprised when her newest CD, Paradiso, turned out to be, as its name implies, heavenly. I remember writing to Gramophone magazine two years ago, responding to an article by conductor David Zinman, who said that his greatest problem in conducting Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony was that he couldn't find the perfect soprano to sing the final section, his setting of a traditional German lyric titled “The Heavenly Life.” The song is an awe-struck child’s vision of Heaven, where the music and the wine are free and everyone dances and sings. St. Martha serves a feast and St. Cecilia leads the musicians. I told the editor that the German song was very similar in its thoughts and emotions to a traditional Celtic lyric titled "The Invocation of the Graces." And I suggested that Hayley would be Zinman's perfect soprano. A few month's later Hayley proved me right when she released Paradiso. On several songs Hayley’s exquisite soprano voice emerges subtly from the orchestral texture. That's what Mahler envisaged for his soprano to depict the youth's reaction to the vision of Paradise. I would love to hear Hayley sing Mahler's song. And I would bet that Ennio Morricone could create a wonderful musical setting of the Celtic poem for Hayley to sing. By Roger (Philadelphia, PA, USA) |
