| I attended a Sly & The Family Stone Concert 1972 In Austin, Texas. The concert was presented by the University Of Texas (Austin) There where only about 15 hundred people at the venue that could have easily held 10 thousand. At any rate it was so cool to be able to nearly touch the band as they performed all of Sly's greatest hits LIVE!! Unfortunately Larry Graham has just begun his solo career with Graham Central Station. However, Rusty Allen did a fantastic job on bass guitar. So I said all that to say this, I am happy to hear that the new school funk stars are jamming with one of the God Father(s) of Funk!! Thanks to Sly Stone By Sir. | "A 4 Star Tribute 2 The Pioneer Of FUNK!" In spite of all the negative reviews for "Different Strokes By Different Folks", I have to give this 'Tribute' compilation no less than 4 stars. Sly Stone is the originator of all things that we recognize in today's music as FUNK, and although the songs in this collection are (for the most part) performed by artists who are really too young to remember Sly's work, this is never-the-less a pretty decent compilation piece. Of course, none of the music in this collection, can hold up to the original recordings, but in all fairness, who would honestly expect it to! Will.i.am's cover of "Dance To The Music" is a very weak comparison to the 1968 S&TFS version, but on the other hand, there are some covers that are really 'SLAMMIN'..."Sing A Simple Song" is actually my favorite track on this album, because of the contributions of Chuck D, D'Angelo and Isaac Hayes (R.I.P.) and "I Get High On You" by The Wylde Bunch is another track that rocks (in a funky way, of course). Actually, the only song on this album that I personally consider to be sub-par is the final track, "Thank You Nation 1814"...I got love for sister Janet, but this one just doesn't work for me. Overall, "Different Strokes By Different Folks" is (in my humble, opinion) a be-fitting tribute to the man who started it all...I know that sounds clique, but honestly, would we have had Parliament-Funkadelic, The Ohio Players, The Bar-Kays, Rick James (R.I.P) or Prince, had we not first had, Sly Stone?
