LONG LIVE THE WHO!!!
This is a really good album from the Who that dosen't really get the good press that it deserves. Granted that this one reflects ageing within the band, but these tracks are classics. Slip Kid is my choice for best song on this one.

Forgotten Masterpiece
This is among the best Who albums, but for some reason tends to be forgotten. I think tunes like Slip Kid, Imagine A Man and Hard Luck Story rank with the Who's best. It also is an intelligent album, more subtle than later albums like It's Hard. Definitely worth 5 stars.

Mature songs and great arrangements
This is a tremendous record from The Who. It is their first record in six years in which there is no connected theme (after Tommy, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia). This is just a wonderful set of songs, played with vigor, by a band facing the challenge of growing up (but not old) in a medium dominated by youth. Pete examines the alcohol troubles which were affecting the band in However Much I Booze and Blue, Red, and Grey. He tackles the growing old issue head on in Dreaming From the Waist and In a Hand or Face. The hit singles were Slip Kid and the novelty like Squeezebox, which, like Magic Bus, became a favorite even though they were written very much tongue in cheek. John Entwistle contributes Success Story, an ironic look at the challenges of rock stardom. My favorite track is How Many Friends, which explores the isolation that can develop between a star and the hangers on and friends who buzz around the queen bee. The music throughout is wonderful, Keith's drumming is exciting but the song structures are tighter and shorter than some of their previous records, so Keith has less room to stretch out. John's bass once again is key, as it carries so much weight that it allows Pete'a guitar to color in the spaces as needed, rather than lead the way. The additional tracks offer the least of any of The Who re-issues, as there are only three live tracks and no unreleased demos or outtakes. The live songs are excellent, but if these songs are available than I am certain that the entire shows from The Who Put the Boot In Tour must be available and should be released in their entirety. For a band with as long a career as The Who, they have only released 10 original studio albums. This one is in the top five.
