| YES! A MUST HAVE CD!!!! I agree! Highly recommended to every ELLINGTON fan on this PLANET!!!! By najponk (Prague) This review is for a different format. |
| ATTENTION ELLINGTON FANS: THIS IS THE ONE TO OWN I have always been particularly fond of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the recordings that were produced between 1956 and 1968, both studio and LIVE. That is because to me, during those 12 years Duke Ellington was at his pinnacle. And this album demonstrates that in LIVING COLOR! I don't have one complaint about this album, "Piano in the Background", that was recorded in 1960 in Los Angeles, only a few months before he and Strayhorn penned the arrangements for, and recorded "Three Suites". This is Ellington at his best, he is featured prominently on all of these upbeat tracks. And to those pianists like myself, listen for the track where Duke ends the song on the lowest note of the 91-key Steinway that he played on this session, he did it in such a way to let the listener know, "Yes I really am playing a 91-key Steinway Piano." That aside, once again the tracks are up tempo, the orchestra is in peak form, Sam Woodyard is playing the hell out of those drums (even if it is just mostly ride cymbal and cross rim shot), and then-newcomer to the band, bassist Aaron Bell demonstrates his ability to make his bass sound like it is taking up the entire room! I love this album and I am so glad to finally own it. I have heard bits and pieces of it on various best of and compilation Ellington records, but to finally have THE album on CD, with BONUS TRACKS, is like having a long time wish finally granted. I sincerely hope any and everybody, Jazz musicians, and dancers alike, or just music lovers period will enjoy this album. By sdhmusic (Omaha, NE) This review is for a different format. |
