Ommadawn album for sale Product Description

First things first. Anybody expecting the 5.1 Surround Sound mix of Ommadawn to follow the preceding Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge in reassessing, and sometimes wholly re-evaluating, the work is probably in for a disappointment. While it there is still one aspect of Ommadawn upon which we should all agree, that, beginning around the 15th minute of side one, and continuing until the end of the side, Oldfield created one of the most dynamic, explosive, and, in places, frightening pieces of music ever composed.   ...See Full Description

A Masterpiece
Probably Mike's best work ever. I never get tired of listening to it even after all these decades. It's a journey filled with incredible passages and instrumentations (and he plays every instrument). Brilliant!

Mike Oldfield is a clever musician. He knows how to bring music to a climax and beautiful anti-climax.

Tubular Bells is Mike Oldfield's most famous work and sometimes I've heard saying (I've often said it too) that is the best album in rock history.Probably Ommadawn is even better.I've never listened to a more mystic and evocative music than this. The advancing of the music is scaned by God's prodigies, who manifests the things (accidentally or by precise purpose?-the music,in a masterly manner, describes the incomprehensibility of these events);also the man appears. Now the "Stupid" ("Ommadawn" is a gaelic word that means, more or less, this) can discover with astonishment this world of which he's a part.Calm pastoral scenes alternate to dramatic sequences of creation, slowly a bucolic timeless world emerges from the fogs,a drop of water slides down a branch and the vision reveals itself. When I think about Ommadawn comes to my mind the image of an universe contained in a bubble(and Oldfield himself,on the sleeve, seems watching from the inside of it).As for the rest, the album blends celtic atmospheres, african drummers (by the way,Africa is "the cradle of man",isn't it?),the Hereford City Band, distorted guitars, bagpipes, the virtuosity of the author (listen to the electric guitar solo about minute 10th) and the usual plethora of instruments almost all played by Oldfield himself. The result is a proper magic.Try to spend a beautiful summery night on a mountain bringing with you Ommadawn and a portable stereo.Listen to it near the fire (with a substantial ration of grilled meat and good wine in the belly),watching the city lights in the distance, the forest wrapped in the darkness around you and the starry universe above, and Ommadawn will cast its spell over you too.

One of the best progressive rock albums!
This piece of art is one of my favorite albums. In my opinion, "Ommadawn" is less commercial than "Tubular Bells" (commonly rated as Olfield's masterpiece) but this one is better structured. The percussions have an important part in the first track. I think these instruments (along with the voices) are the base of the strong dynamism. The perfect crescendo at the end of the song is almost orgasmic. The electric guitar solo flows perfectly well with the rhythm (bass, drums, voices, etc.). Its really a job worthy of his abilities as a composer. The second track is a beautiful piece with many variations and some instruments that sound like Celtic music. Finally, the third track is a short poem sung by The Penrhos Kids and "the Creator": Mike Oldfield.
