Brian Culbertson XII CD (2010) Top Seller
Funky Joint songs Given the widespread critical acclaim and commercial success Brian Culbertson garnered from 2008's retro Bringing Back the Funk, it would be understandably tempting for him -- or any musician -- to revisit it wholesale. However, Culbertson throws a changeup on XII and comes up with a set of collaborative originals with stellar guests that relies more on modern adult R&B than funk, and more on sophisticated pop than it does on contemporary jazz. He's got real star power on this set; it's a groover that includes everything from club to go-go funk, up- and midtempo R&B, and polished bedroom ballads, and it ...

Brian Culbertson Dreams CD (2012) Top Seller
Funky Joint CD music On Dreams, Brian Culbertson attempts to dig further into the vein he opened on 2010's XII, where he seamlessly married adult-oriented R&B to contemporary jazz. In fact, Dreams feels like a bookend of sorts. He employs an alternating cast of studio aces who include Alex Al, John "Jubu" Smith, Eric Marienthal, Michael Stever, Ray Parker, Jr., Rex Rideout, and Rob "Fonksta" Bacon, as well as a trio of vocalists: Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), Vivian Green, and Noel Gourdin. There are some stellar numbers here, including the Williams vehicle, "No Limits," a midtempo babymaker. Culbertson's acoustic piano, Smith's guitar, and some pronounced loops ride atop the bassline to frame the singer's mellifluous tenor. This ...

Euge Groove S7even Large CD (2011)
Funky Joint album for sale The first couple of albums by saxophonist Euge Groove (aka Steven Eugene Grove) made Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. His sixth album, Sunday Morning, was listed in the magazine's Jazz Albums chart, and that shift in category doesn't only reflect a blurring in the distinction between "contemporary" and traditional jazz. Groove hasn't become a mainstream jazz artist exactly, but he has focused more on live takes and live musicians in the studio over synthesized tracks to play over. He begins "The Funky Bunch," an original composition on his seventh album, S7even Large, with a count-in, and that emphasizes the impression that he and fellow musicians including keyboardist Tracy Carter, guitarists Ross Bolton, ...

Peter White Here We Go CD (2012) Top Seller
Funky Joint buy CD music The follow-up to 2009's Good Day, Peter White's 13th studio effort, 2012's Here We Go, features more of the adept smooth jazz guitarist's lyrical and lightly funky cuts. Sticking primarily to his acoustic nylon-string guitar, White mixes in keyboards, various percussion instruments, saxes, and horns to create various moods throughout with the primary vibe being one of relaxed joy. To these ends, we get the steamy R&B-infused cut "Time Never Sleeps," the languid instrumental pop of "Our Dance," and the club-ready dance number "Joyride." Adding to the sophisticated aura of the album are guest appearances by such artists as David Sanborn, Andrew Neu, and Kirk Whalum. ~ Matt Collar

Richard Elliot In the Zone CD (2011) Top Seller
Funky Joint album for sale Richard Elliot's In the Zone picks up where 2009's Rock Steady left off. Where that album paid tribute to the saxophonist's R&B heroes, In the Zone, which marks Elliot's 25th anniversary as a recording artist, offers a thank-you to the influences of his predecessors in the smooth jazz genre: namely Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, and Bob James. Co-produced with Jeff Lorber, with horn charts -- and horns -- by David Mann, Elliot composed eight of the ten tracks on the set, co-wrote one with Lorber (who appears on keyboards and guitar), and offers a fine cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)" as a nod to Washington's stellar version in the early '70s. Things kick off breezily enough with "Island Style"; its Caribbean groove ...
