A Monster This covers the full spectrum of DLR era, first time around but with a wonderfully invigorated vibe (sounds like a body odour product!). I ahd a dirty great smile on my face from beginning to end and it is a consistently good recording Ed is ON FIRE and his music abilities never cease to amaze. There is a reckless abandon that has re-emerged and seems to only occur with DLR (even though I never got into the singer war) Wolfie lays down a fantastic foundation with Uncle Al and the production is top notch Daves vocals are as good as he ever sung and his fitness must be the key There is something for everyone on this except those that want a hit single. This rates 9 out of 10 as background vocals and the 'brownsound' are missed a little (but not much so DONT dwell on it!) What a comeback. I will be travelling from Australia to see them By andyd (Adelaide, South Australia)
A kick to the pants and then some A different kind of truth dares to take chances, and that's a good thing. While Tattoo is a bit poppy, never fear--the boys are back and firing (Alex with driving drums and Eddie playing super guitar on the 2nd track). I play this at the gym all the time, and it is full of energy. The album is well balanced with slower paced tunes--"You and your blues", fast tempo rockers "China Town", and "Stay Frosty", a surprise hit that may be the best track on the album. The sonic energy on the album shows that Van Halen can still rock in their late 50s. By Dave (New York, USA)
A Solid Effort Unlike some of the other reviewers on here, I actually like "Tattoo" a lot. It's got by far the best hook and chorus on the album and unlike several of the other tracks, you can actually make out pretty much all the lyrics when Dave's singing them. But the rest of the album is pretty solid. Eddie's playing is strong and it does sound much more like the vintage stuff than the Hagar era. I'd have to agree that is has a bit of a "Fair Warning" sound to it, though "Stay Frosty" is pretty mch a sequel to "Ice Cream Man." I actually saw them in concert last week and was disappointed they didn't play this after they did "Ice Cream Man," though Dave told the crowd to stay frosty as the show ended. But overall a fun album. Good driving music. By Ken (Muncie, IN)
Awesomeness This Train just keeps on Rollin and Rockin. Great to party to, great to Work- Out to. Eddie is on fire here, the production brilliant, and Roths lyrics are as crazy and thought provoking as ever. Stellar job boyz! By richabyss (midwest USA)
Impossible truth This album rocks from start to end. Dave is in top form and Eddie kills on each and every solo. EVH plays as well as he ever has - and that's saying something. Get out of the way, the King is Back. Production quality is awesome, the record begs to be turned up to 10 (and beyond). Great Job Guys By hasee55 (Waterville, ME)
