Chrysalis Years (1980-1986) songs Huge Egyptian sphinxes on either side and a gigantic mummy in the middle that shoots pyrotechnic sparks from its eyes, all state-of-the-art high-tech razzle-dazzle with the band performing "The Trooper," "Powerslave," "Revelations," "Aces High," "Run to the Hills," and more. This 2 DVD set was filmed toward the end of 'The World Slavery Tour' at Los Angeles' Long Beach Arena. This was the most ambitious, longest, and most grueling tour Maiden ever experienced. As the 2nd installment to 2004's The Early Days DVD, the 2nd disc features the highly anticipated 'THE HISTORY OF IRON MAIDEN PART II' which gives an insight into the making of the record as well as exploring the creativity and the background pressures created through the sheer hard work and the physical toll that comes with success at this level for a touring band. Included are rare and unseen footage, photos, promo videos, artwork, tour dates, tour program, and more. This title carries a parental advisory.

Chrysalis Years (1980-1986) CD music Some things are immune to trends, and Ronnie James Dio's golden voice is one of them. The alleged inventor of the devil-horns symbol (as it pertains to metal) had a memorable stint as the singer of Black Sabbath after St. Ozzy's departure, leaving behind two classic albums in MOB RULES and HEAVEN AND HELL. Though the rest of Sabbath has mainly focused on working with Ozzy in the 2000s, a 2007 tour with Dio whetted their appetites for a fresh collaboration as Heaven & Hell. The result, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, stands proudly beside the band's prime material. Like anything associated with Dio, the music is unapologetically operatic, with almost every song clocking in at around or over five minutes. The singer wails his tales of darkness and mystical evil over Tony Iommi's trademark doom-inflected chords, heavy as a marble tomb and churning like a witch's cauldron. Recording information: Rockfield Studios, Monmouth, Wales. Photographer: Chapman Baehler. Personnel: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Vinny Appice (drums). Audio Mixer: Wyn Davis.

Chrysalis Years (1980-1986) buy CD music Black Country Communion's self-titled debut met with so much critical and, in some markets, even commercial success that the multi-talented super-quartet wasted little time -- an almost worrisomely short amount of time, in fact -- before getting to work on this sophomore follow-up. But, thankfully, striking while the iron was hot did not equate with going through the motions on 2011's unassumingly named 2; nor, for that matter, did it entail the sort of battle between mega-egos that is so common to these superstar arrangements. Rather, while the smart money had BCC pegged as vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes' ship to captain, BCC2 actually sounds like the baby of drummer Jason Bonham, of all people, because so many of its songs show no qualms about getting the "Led" out, if you catch the meaning. This modus operandi quickly becomes self-evident in Derek Sherinian's "Kashmir"-like keyboard orchestrations for "Man in the Middle" and "Save Me," guitarist Joe Bonamassa's Jimmy Page-inspired power riffs and knotty licks for "Smokestack Woman" and "I Can See Your Spirit," not to mention the all-purpose "Battle of Evermore" rewrite on steroids that is "The Battle for Hadrian's Wall." Far from descending into a pale imitation like, say, a Kingdom Come or late-'80s Whitesnake, however, BCC's offerings rise above and fly true thanks to the unimpeachable pedigree and recognizable musical personalities of all involved here. It's also highly entertaining to hear Hughes -- he of Deep Purple MKIII and sporadic collaborations with Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi -- getting all cozy with the third and final cornerstone of the legendary British heavy metal axis. And of course there's much more to BCC2 than pundit-sanctioned Zep worship. Urgent opener "The Outsider" delivers heavy rock so pure that its ingredients are already etched in the public domain by now; "An Ordinary Son" blends Bonamassa's blues, Hughes' soul, and Sherinian's churchy Hammond organ into a heavenly gospel rocker; and the slow-burning epic "Little Secret" (plus, to a lesser degree, the distinctly somber "Cold") stretches the expressive breadth of Hughes' voice and Bonamassa's six-string to both their most subtle and bombastic extremes, resulting in an exquisite display of pent-up tension and grateful release. As a result, BCC2 arguably tops its worthy predecessor as a balanced song set while, admittedly, lacking any singles as striking as BCC1's "One Last Soul" or even "Black Country," none of which should bother the last living album consumers out there, who obviously make up the vast majority of the band's constituents. And here's hoping Black Country Communion can keep the ball rolling into album number three.... ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Liner Note Authors: Glenn Hughes ; Kevin Shirley. Recording information: East West Studios, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Christie Goodwin. Personnel: Joe Bonamassa (vocals, guitar); Glenn Hughes (vocals, bass guitar); Derek Sherinian (keyboards); Jason Bonham (drums). Audio Mixer: Kevin Shirley.

Chrysalis Years (1980-1986) CD music Uriah Heep play to their strengths on Into the Wild, the band's 22nd studio album in 41 years. Despite the group's reputation for personnel changes, its current members have mostly been in place for decades (drummer Russell Gilbrook joined in 2007), and they play like musicians who have been reading each other's minds on-stage during hundreds of shows a year for many years; the disc is full of cohesive musical teamwork, creating a unified sound. Like many long-lived outfits, Uriah Heep created a classic sound (the goth/prog style of the early `70s), then spent an extended period (mostly the `80s) modifying that sound to try to conform to contemporary styles, after which (starting with 1995's Sea of Light), they fell back on trying to re-create their golden era. The group is, in a sense, a tribute band to itself, and while it has worked steadily, it has recorded less frequently; Into the Wild's predecessor, Wake the Sleeper (2008), was the first new Uriah Heep studio album in nine years. Like Wake the Sleeper, Into the Wild sounds like an album that could have been made in the 1970s. From the outset with "Nail on the Head," the hard rock style is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and, particularly, Bad Company, with singer Bernie Shaw often recalling Paul Rodgers. On songs like "Money Talk," which prominently feature Phil Lanzon's organ, Deep Purple is heavily suggested. The songs, mostly written by Lanzon with sole original member and guitarist Mick Box, have sturdy structures all the better for filling with soaring guitar solos and lyrics that, notably on the power ballad "Trail of Diamonds," can lean toward the mystical. There may be no new Uriah Heep classics here, but there are songs that can be slotted in the set list among the group's classics without sending fans rushing to the concession stands. Uriah Heep don't really need to make new albums anymore, but it's understandable that, as an ongoing outfit, they want to, and Into the Wild is a respectable addition to their catalog. ~ William Ruhlmann Recording information: Liscombe Park Studios, UK (01/2001). Photographers: Richard Wagner ; John Price; Hans W. Rock. Personnel: Mick Box, Trevor Bolder (vocals, guitar); Phil Lanzon (vocals, keyboards); Russell Gilbrook (vocals, drums); Bernie Shaw (vocals). Audio Mixer: Mark "Tufty" Evans.
