En Vivo! album for sale Most people think of the legendary Ronnie James Dio as one of heavy metal's sage elder statesmen, but when his newly minted namesake band performed at the 1983 Castle Donington Monsters of Rock Festival, fresh off the release of their soon-to-be seminal debut album, Holy Diver, they behaved like fresh-faced upstarts with everything to prove. Don't believe it? Well then, consider the fact that, despite his already enviable track record at the helm of Elf, Rainbow, and Black Sabbath, on that hot August day, Dio and his charges found themselves crammed fifth on the bill, warming up the crowd for Whitesnake, Meat Loaf, ZZ Top, and Twisted Sister! But, as you'd expect from the indefatigable vocalist (already 41-years-old that day!), his professional standards never fell short of headlining status as he guided his handpicked bandmembers -- faithful Sabbath partner, drummer Vinnie Appice, former Rainbow associate, bassist Jimmy Bain, and white-hot guitar prodigy Vivian Campbell -- through an energized set of past and future heavy metal classics. With only 45 minutes allotted to them, the band blazed through the newer Dio cuts ("Stand Up and Shout," "Rainbow in the Dark," "Holy Diver") in the concert's first half before embarking on a medley of established fan favorites combining portions of "Stargazer," "Starstruck," "Man on the Silver Mountain" (all Rainbow standards), and the Sabs' "Heaven and Hell," which, when stretched out to include an audience participation section, nearly brought down the ol' Castle. Final verdict: all killer, no filler. Four years later, Dio were invited back to Donington, sans Campbell (recently replaced by Craig Goldy), but tellingly slotted second only to headliners Bon Jovi on a bill also featuring -- get this: Metallica, Anthrax, W.A.S.P., and Cinderella -- a testament to the group's great success during in the intervening years. But, in contrast to this, Dio's performance felt a little less inspired and spontaneous (more like clockwork than hungry to please) due to the many years they'd spent grinding it out on tour -- not to mention churning out steadily diluted original material like "Dream Evil," "Rock and Roll Children," and "Naked in the Rain" (remember that one? Neither do we). "The Last in Line," at least, still held sway with magnificent gravitas, and, as always, the Rainbow and Sabbath nuggets were interspersed amid these cuts, oftentimes in truncated form, making for alternately confusing and entertaining combinations that ultimately sent the punters home happy. Now, decades on, these two landmark performances finally see the light of day as the first release issued by Dio's own Niji Entertainment Group, but, tragically, the double-disc set arrived just a few months after the great singer's passing following a short but typically spirited battle against stomach cancer. En Vivo! songs Megadeth's 13th studio album, and first since 2001's The World Needs a Hero to utilize the talents of bassist/founding member Dave Ellefson, was produced by Johnny K (Staind, Disturbed) and features a combination of newly composed tracks, along with older cuts written years ago but never put to tape. Darker, heavier, and more immediate than 2009's Endgame, Dave Mustaine's snarling vocals ride higher in the mix this time around, but fans need not fear, as his fleet fingers are still possessed with the power to conjure the dead. Much of the aptly named Th1rt3en feels vintage, from the familiar political themes on "We the People" and the tightly wound, Dio-esque riffing on "Public Enemy No. 1" to the soft, melodramatic military snare intro of "Never Dead," which eventually explodes into a wicked blast of retro-thrash that feels positively invigorating, not redundant. Elsewhere, the melodic slow-burn "Millennium of the Blind" fuses Ten Years After's "I'd Love to Change the World" and Metallica's "Fade to Black" into an anti-corporation/war rant that calls out the "millennials" on their submissiveness, the snaky "Black Swan" casts long shadows that mimic "Symphony of Destruction," and first single "Sudden Death" stands defiant before the skeptics who thought that Mustaine's newfound faith would render him bereft of the old ultraviolence. ~ James Christopher Monger Recording information: Mustaine Music Studios, San Marcos, CA. En Vivo! album for sale The idea behind FLIGHT 666 was seemingly birthed from a WAYNE'S WORLD fantasy sequence: the mighty Iron Maiden would embark upon a world tour of exotic locales, transported to each venue in a custom 757 jet piloted by the band's lead singer, with scores of crew, journalists, and family members in tow. Surprisingly, the band not only pulled off the mind-boggling undertaking but delivered an extraordinary live album in the process. The FLIGHT 666 soundtrack compares favorably with the band's classic in-concert disc, LIVE AFTER DEATH, and, since it is heavy on classic Maiden tracks like "Run to the Hills" and "The Trooper," would also serve as a fine introduction for newbies. The first anthology to cover the band's post-halcyon days, it's remarkable how seamless the transition was. Unlike other acts that left their handprints in the cement in the late '70s and '80s, Iron Maiden never really lost steam, despite a mid-'90s shake-up that saw iconic lead singer Bruce Dickinson swapped out with Wolfsbane vocalist Blaze Bayley for two albums. The addition of keyboards, a controversial, late-'80s move that split some fans upon the releases of Somewhere in Time (1986) and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988), proved largely tasteful and subtle, and did little to hinder their signature blend of fantasy-fueled symphonic metal and straight-up English hard rock. Culled from eight studio albums (including the pair of Bayley offerings), the songs on From Fear to Eternity may not reach the dizzying heights of the band's Piece of Mind/Number of the Beast heyday, but stand-out cuts like "The Wicker Man," "Different World," "Tailgunner," "Dance of Death," and "Brave New World" bristle with the energy and conviction of a group 20 years younger. Dickinson's voice is apparently indestructible, and the triple-guitar attack, held down to the mat by the incomparable Steve Harris (founder/bassist), remains a veritable master class in heavy metal picking.
