John Carter Soundtrack Product Description
John Carter Soundtrack by Michael Giacchino was released Mar 06, 2012 on the Walt Disney label. Filled with mystery, drama, and tension, Michael Giacchino's original score to John Carter, the big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Princess of Mars, beautifully sets the tone for this science fiction adventure. Evoking the dramatic tension of classic scores by luminaries like John Williams, the soundtrack easily conjures images of the iconic hero's adventures across the red planet, creating the tension required for blockbuster action while also capturing the loneliness of the movie's sprawling deserts. John Carter Soundtrack contains a single disc with 19 songs. ...See Full Description

James Horner Avatar CD (2009) Top Seller
John Carter Soundtrack The score for director James Cameron's epic 3-D sci-fi adventure Avatar was composed by longtime collaborator James Horner, who won an Oscar for his work on the director's 1997 blockbuster, Titanic. Never one to shy away from familiar motifs, the vaguely wistful, mostly magical main theme that weaves its way throughout the film relies unapologetically on the composer's Titanic love theme (try humming the first three notes of the chorus to the Horner-penned Celine Dion smash "My Heart Will Go On"), but the overall feel of the score owes more to Ennio Morricone's iconic work on The Mission, utilizing an atmospheric blend of native drums and choirs with lush, traditional adventure orchestration. The album is rounded out with Leona Lewis' torch ballad "I See You." ~ James Christopher Monger

Daft Punk Tron: Legacy CD (2010)
John Carter Soundtrack Sci-fi, film, and music fans alike cheered when it was announced Daft Punk would score Tron: Legacy, the sequel to the 1982 classic Tron. After all, the French duo's robo-aesthetic owed a notable debt to the film's forward-thinking, playful, yet ominous take on technology. On pieces like "The Game Has Changed," Daft Punk pay homage to their legacy as well as Tron's, fusing their aerodynamic disco-house with propulsive orchestral elements.

Danny Elfman Wanted CD (2008)
John Carter Soundtrack Composer Danny Elfman proves a good choice to score the action film Wanted, but before his typically lively background music begins, he returns to his earlier career as the leader of a pop/rock band with the opening track, "The Little Things." Here, he pretends that he is once again the lead singer of Oingo Boingo, turning in a good song in the style of the late blue-eyed soul singer Robert Palmer. Then, he gives the 87-member Hollywood Symphony Orchestra some work to do, keeping up with the adventures of the film's hero, Wes, in what must be lots of chasing and shooting; the orchestra is augmented here and there with synthesized sounds to accentuate some of the more forceful passages. A mock Gregorian chant lends reverence to "Fraternity Suite," as Wes learns of his heritage. A Middle Eastern flavor enters into "Fox's Decision." But for the most part this is rigorously written and performed Hollywood action music meant to supplement an already high-adrenalin viewing experience. ~ William Ruhlmann

Thor CD (2011)
John Carter Soundtrack Composer Patrick Doyle, who brought a new-found boldness to the Harry Potter franchise in 2005 with his Goblet of Fire score, treats director Kenneth Branagh's big-screen adaptation of Marvel Comic's iconic Norse superhero Thor with appropriate gravitas. The longtime Branagh collaborator (Henry V, Dead Again) sets the stage with "Chasing the Storm," a tense and surging unveiling of the main theme, which sounds a bit like a cross between the James Newton Howard and Hanz Zimmer's Batman Begins cue and Zimmer's "CheValiers de Sangreal" theme from the Da Vinci Code, and like Zimmer, Doyle knows how to whip a circular melody into a frenzy. Elsewhere, the lovely and appropriately stoic "Sons of Odin" is awash in traditional fantasy elements, while the epic "Compound" unveils a more modern, sci-fi action approach, resulting in a score that's wistful, heroic, and as grand as the fantastic realm of Asgard itself. ~ James Christopher Monger

Danny Elfman Terminator: Salvation CD (2009)
John Carter Soundtrack Danny Elfman, the prolific former leader of the cult new wave band Oingo Boingo, started earning Hollywood acclaim for his work scoring movies by director Tim Burton. Elfman has also composed the exciting music for 2009's Terminator Salvation, the fourth film in the blockbuster science fiction franchise. Brad Fiedel originally composed the hauntingly memorable synthesizer-based music for 1984's The Terminator and 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Marco Beltrami took the reins for 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, which featured a more conventional orchestral score and a new take on Fiedel's original theme. Elfman's Terminator Salvation work is also orchestral and contains subtle nods to Fiedel's theme while maintaining a consistent vision. The strings, brass, and percussion superbly reflect the moods of the scenes: relentless action, dramatic tension, and emotional vulnerability. It's the deft little touches Elfman briefly adds here and there that give this music depth, most notably ethereal classical guitar lines, soft piano chords, and sputtering percussion.
