Three Stooges review Product Description
Three Stooges movie was released Mar 06, 2012 by the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment studio. The comedy team that made the phrase "nyuk nyuk nyuk" part of the American vocabulary gets the full biographical treatment in this made-for-TV feature. THE THREE STOOGES opens in 1959, as a TV executive tries to persuade Moe Howard (Paul Ben-Victor) to reunite with his former onscreen partners to publicize the television premiere of a package of Three Stooges classic comedy shorts. Howard then flashes back on his long and remarkable career, as vaudeville star Ted Healy (Marton Csokas) assembles Moe Howard, sibling Shemp Howard (John Kassir), and Larry Fine (Evan Handler) as "stooges" for his stage act. As Moe, Shemp, and Larry gain popularity, a jealous Healy forces them to strike out on their own, but after many grueling years on the road, Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn (Linal Haft) offers them a chance to star in their own series of two-reel comedies. But Shemp, always stage-shy, backs out of the group, and his brother Jerome (Michael Chiklis) -- aka "Curly" -- takes over, and the Three Stooges become a sensation. ...See Full Description

| Characters With Character Three Stooges movie In 2000, this movie got a big buildup because no bio had been attempted (to my knowledge) of the Stooges that revealed what they were like as people offscreen who had come up through the Hollywood star system from vaudeville beginnings and made it big. There WERE 3 human beings behind the "idiots" we saw on the screen, and this film gives us a peek. The film is well cast, with all 3 leads giving straight-ahead performances. We see them as the real, flawed, and sometimes tragic people they were, and how they became that way. Also included are recreations of scenes from various of their comedies (done in black and white, no less!) that are spot on. Michael Chiklis, especially, in a role not normally associated with him, depicts Curly about as accurately as can be expected, but no actor can depict that crazy Stooge, so that's why 4 stars out of 5, plus a couple of other things. I believe much of the screenplay is based on the book Moe Howard wrote about the subject, and it depicts the 3 Stooges as very human, and that only increases the appreciation we can have for them as actors. This is a serious depiction, and not at all like the modernized update from last year, which is merely an extension of the 3 Stooges characters, NOT the actors that played them. This is a biographical movie in the true sense of the word, and worth your attention. By Neil (South San Francisco, CA, USA) |
