| FINALLY the DVD release of one of Argento's most important He'd make stronger/better films, such as "Suspiria" and "Deep Red," but this an important early film of his career, still deeply indebted to his mentor/hero MARIO BAVA. Great job on the DVD - film nicely remasterd plus quite a few very valuable supplements on the disc. Those old VHS boots from TV broadcasts can now be safely retired. Don't look for academy-award winning acting or photography here, look for Argento's vision, because the acting is mediocre at best, nor did Argento have the budget of a David Lean ... or even Terence Fisher, so no super-widescreen panoramas will be found here. Instead you get a Bava-acolyte slowly maturing in his craft. By hammeris1 (South Carolina) This review is for a different format. |
| Classic early Argento. True, the acting is mostly indifferent, but this is still classic early Argento, not quite on par with Bird with the Crystal Plumage, but an improvement on Cat 'o Nine Tails. Excellent photography, nail-biting suspense, strikingly bizarre camera angles, disturbing motifs of pathological psychology, and spot-on timing combine to make this a compulsively viewable film. The reason why I would place this a notch or so behind Bird is because the narrative is pretty flimsy. Apparently, unsatisfied with the plot-oriented construction of the first two animal giallos, Argento stripped down the narrative without suffusing the film with the same amount of detail and florid aesthetics that would flourish in Deep Red. As a result, Flies hovers somewhat hesitantly between the two styles. This DVD a must-own all the same for true Argento fans. My only complaint is that there are no English subtitles for those who wish to listen to the Italian language track. The only subtitles on this disc appear near the end of the film, for a few moments of dialogue previously edited from the English language cut and which now only appears in Italian.
