Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album for sale With Recovery, it becomes obvious that Eminem's richest albums aren't necessarily his most structurally sound, which isn't much of a surprise when considering the rapper's full-on embrace of flaws and contradictions. This lean, mean, bipolar machine began life as Relapse 2, but when Shady decided he wasn't really Shady at the moment, and that he was no longer keen on Relapse -- or the last two albums, as he states on "Talkin' 2 Myself" -- it became Marshall Mathers time again, so damn any 11th hour issues. This results in an album where a shameless but killer Michael J. Fox punch line ("The world will stop spinnin' and Michael J. Fox`ll come to a standstill" from "Cold Wind") is followed by a song with another, less effective MJF joke ("Make like Michael J. Fox in your drawers, playin' with an Etch-A-Sketch"), although that song is the lurching heavy metal monster "Won't Back Down" with P!nk, and it could be used as the lead-in to "Lose Yourself" on any ego-boosting mixtape. Ignoring these contradictions, fans can feed on the energy, the renewed sense of purpose, and Marshall doing whatever the hell he wants, up to and including shoehorning a grand, D12-like comedy number ("W.T.P.," which stands for "White Trash Party") into this emotionally heavy album. It's fascinating when Em admits "Hatred was flowin' through my veins, on the verge of goin' insane/I almost made a song dissin' Lil Wayne" and then "Thank God I didn't do it/I'da had my ass handed to me, and I knew it," before sparring with said Weezy on the Haddaway-sampling "No Love." When the recovery-minded "Going Through Changes" gets back on the wagon by sampling Black Sabbath's very druggy "Changes," it's a brilliant and layered idea that's executed with poignant lyrics on top. Add the man at his most profound (the gigantic hit "Not Afraid") and his most profane ("You wanna get graphic? We can go the scenic route/You couldn't make a bulimic puke on a piece of corn and peanut poop" from "On Fire") plus one of thickest lyric booklets out of any of his albums and the fans who really listen are instantly on board. It may be flawed and the rapper's attitude is sometimes one step ahead of his output, but he hasn't sounded this unfiltered and proud since The Marshall Mathers LP, so to hell with refinement -- bring on the hunger and spirit of 8 Mile. ~ David Jeffries Recording information: Ajax, Ontario; Area 51 Studio; Avex Honolulu Studios, Honolulu, HI; Black Chiney Studios, Ft. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded songs Losing none of the momentum put in motion by his 2009 effort, Deeper Than Rap, Rick Ross keeps a very good thing going on Teflon Don, arguably his best album to date. You want rap-style luxury? Then Deeper is the better fit, but Teflon plays up the chilled and soulful elements of its predecessor, meaning Ross has graduated to a level where words like "organic" and "poignant" come into play. The former is best represented by "Mayback Music III" and it's swirling, `70s-flavored dreamscape created by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League production team. Ross allows guests T.I. and Jadakiss to go first on the cut, then grabs his cigar for an uplifting story of ghetto triumph that goes from pushing to pleasing the folks ("Parents never had a good job/Now it's black American Express cards"). When it comes to "poignant," the evidence is dotted throughout the album with the rapper reflecting on where he's been, and he often questions his own lust for fame. He chants the title to the opening "I'm Not a Star" as if it was a remindful mantra, but it's his new love of contrasts that's really interesting, following Kanye's swaggering on "Live Fast, Die Young" with "Seems to me we gettin' money for the wrong things/Look around, Maseratis for the whole team/Look at Haiti, children dyin' round the clock/I'd send a hundred grand but that's a decent watch". The familiar party and thugging tunes work too with "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)," "No. 1," and the mixtape favorite "MC Hammer" -- now with added Gucci Mane verse -- all coming correct. Add all the Illuminati references in the Jay-Z team-up ("Free Mason"), a decent smoking song ("Super High"), and a track where Cee-Lo's performance just might make you misty ("Tears of Joy"), and it's obvious Ross' albums are no longer just vessels for his singles. ~ David Jeffries Recording information: Avex Recording Studio, Honolulu, HI; Blakeslee Recording Company, North Hollywood, CA; Bull Dog Studios, Sag Harbor, NY; Circle House Studios, Miami, FL; D-Block Studio, Yonkers, NY; F.A.T.E. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded buy CD music By the time 2010 rolled around, debuts like Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday could still fall into the "highly anticipated" category, but the reasoning was different. Two years of strong mixtapes and guest appearances meant the hip-hop faithful already knew this sometimes dirty debutante could take that gutsy Lil' Kim style to another level, and that both the single and the full-length format were at her command. The only question left is how this versatile artist would present herself to the general public, and the answer is a Gwen Stefani-meets-Baz Luhrman-meets-Young Money-type affair that both dazzles and disappoints. Feed off the production, the great musical ideas, and Minaj's keen sense of her surroundings, and Pink Friday is an outstanding success. It's chock-full of new wave textures and diva attitude, creating the kind of atmosphere where will.i.am stops over while you tell the haters to kill themselves over a "Video Killed the Radio Star" sample ("Check It Out"). More grand moments come when Kanye West and Minaj mack together on the great, Simple Minds-sampling "Blazin," or when "Your Love" waltzes out of the speakers with a unique brand of hood majesty, but when "Dear Old Nicki" comes round with "In hindsight, I loved your rawness and I loved your edge," Minaj suggests that her growth as an artist requires the sacrificing of all Trina-like qualities. Confusingly, the key track, "Romans Revenge," finds her winning while acting as savage as ever, standing up to Eminem -- who is in gross-mode -- and literally roaring like a tiger to get the job done. This is the Nicki the mixtape crowd fell in love with, and you only need check out 2009's mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty for examples of how the Barbie (read: pop and R&B) and the bitch (read: hip-hop) sides of Minaj can be sensibly presented together. In the end, Pink Friday is an ambitious, glossy stunner if fashion week is your favorite time of year, but Minaj didn't earn her diva status this way. Longtime fans familiar with her underground work won't even consider this her debut, just an extravagant coming out party, the kind where the invite mentions "no sneakers or athletic apparel." ~ David Jeffries Photographer: G.L. Wood.

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded songs In 2012, right on schedule, Rihanna delivered her fourth annual November album. The singer took a different route with the lead single. She didn't go with a dramatic ballad like "Russian Roulette" or a big dance number like "Only Girl (In the World)" and "We Found Love." Instead, the nod went to a midtempo pop ballad, "Diamonds" -- as in "We're like diamonds in the sky" (rather than stars in a mine), a simple and effective, light in meaning yet massive in sonics, quasi-processional. Even with that change of pace, the possibility of it signaling an overall change in direction was slight. Not only is Unapologetic just as varied as Rihanna's past albums -- it's another timely refresh of contemporary pop music -- but it's a little more exploratory and a whole lot deeper, too. Continuing the trend that began on Rated R, Rihanna's at her best when she's flaunting. This goes for "Pour It Up," a characteristically chilly and booming Mike Will collaboration that might as well be a sequel to "Bandz a Make Her Dance," the producer's hit with Juicy J. Wrapped in a serene sneer, Rihanna's trash talk is something else. Moments such as that one are so convincing that the few everywoman heart-on-sleeve songs -- with the exception of the massive, slamming, wailing power ballad that is "What Now" -- don't sound all that natural. Two of the album's most intriguing, contrasting, and not-so-everywoman tracks appear consecutively during the latter half. Both of them were written and produced by Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Carlos "Los" McKinney. "Nobody's Business," flecked with elements from Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," is a beaming if somewhat belligerent disco-house duet with Chris Brown. Rihanna's partner proposes to make out in a Lexus prior to proclaiming that the relationship "ain't nobody's business." The celebration is followed by "Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary," conjoined songs with a wide theatrical scope akin to that of the-Dream's own "Nikki, Pt. 2/Abyss." Over a swelling and receding production with echoes of Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis' Eyes," Rihanna mourns ("Felt like love struck me in the night/I pray that love don't strike twice"), then confesses ("Mother Mary, I swear I wanna change"), then surrenders ("I'm prepared to die in the moment"). Perhaps no one should read anything into it. The same could be said of "No Love Allowed," which comes along a little later. Even with a captivating, drum-less reggae groove, it's hard to hear lines like "Your love hit me to the core" and "It's so foolish how you keep me wanting more" and think that she's fine and could be singing about anyone. While this is a fine, if uneven album, the only way to enjoy a significant portion of it is by taking it as pure entertainment. Good luck. ~ Andy Kellman Deluxe CD/DVD edition includes a bonus DVD that contains exclusive live and behind the scenes footage. 2012 album from the R&B superstar.
