For Fans of the Genre
London 2012 for the Xbox 360 has received some pretty scathing reviews, much of them undeserved in my opinion. London 2012 game The developers would have been faced with a herculean task, challenged to pack the excitement of so many Olympic events into just one game. Having grown up playing Summer Games (EPYX) on the Commodore 64, this title shows just how much the gaming industry has grown up over the last 25 years. The controls are easy to learn so you any beginner can pick this up and immediately start competing for the gold, but not so easy as to discourage more veteran gamers. Some of the events such as the 100 meters, or Skulls only require repeatedly pushing one button, or moving the joysticks back and forth, but timing is the key here. As the sparkle of the Olympics wanes as time goes on, perhaps this title may have garnered more excitement earlier in the summer, I think there is still enough wow factor packed into this game to make it extremely enjoyable. The graphics are superb (If you own a 3D TV, the effects are absolutely outstanding) and you can skip by the cut scenes pretty quickly so events move along very quickly. Sure, the game could have benefited from a more robust customization feature, where you could add your own face or customize your countries uniform, but it is still very much a solid title. Unfortunately the gaming industry hands out gold medals to games with fast and furious action, first person shooters, RPGs and Hollywood styled interactive games and not enough of these types of titles get the attention they deserve. Is this a gold medal winner? No. The commentating could have done with a little bit more realism (look to EA Sports titles such as FIFA or NHL) and perhaps more of a glitzy, broadcast style presentation. It definitely deserves to be on the podium though. If you enjoyed the Olympics this year, I'd recommend picking up this hidden gem. For those critics that have used this disc for skeet shooting, keep in mind that the game was designed with all players of any skill level in mind and I believe they have succeeded. I hope that one day we can have authentic athletes involved and kick this up a notch. Rio... here we come.
