Capitol's usual mishap
After more than twenty years of waiting for this splendid Kenton album to appear on CD,Capitol, not new on mishandling the old fabulous masters they have in their vault, did it again! (The unlucky predecessors were "Kenton in Hi-Fi" and Peggy Lee's "Live at Basin Street"),they remastered the CD in mono, giving as excuse that the "stereo master had the soloists off-mike and so they preferred the mono recording" (at the time, each session was recorded separately, for the mono and stereo version).Well,as it happens,I own the stereo version of the LP,and I can assure you (and the Capitol engineers)that the sound was absolutely magnificent, given the acoustic problems of the Balboa's Rendevous (Kenton's own ballroom),while the mono version they have remastered has a confuse,over-reverberant,tubby sound.Really horrible. The same thing occurred at the time, with another magnificent recording by Jackie Gleason,"Velvet Brass".I buyed first the mono version of the LP,which was unlistenable, and then the stereo, which is one of the finest recordings of all times.(It goes without saying that this legendary recording was never published on CD by Capitol).Musically, the album is,of course, wonderful. The Bill Holman arrangements are among Kenton's best and the musicians are in top form. Well, let's hope that in the next twenty years, when Capitol will decide it's high time to publish the still missing albums by Stan Kenton ("Viva Kenton","The Stage Door Swings","Kenton in Bossa Nova","Kenton & Wagner",among others),they'll also decide to let us finally have the original recordings, done my greatly competent engineers, for which Capitol was justly famous, without messing with those historical, precious recordings, and, most of all,let us decide which is best:we can always push a mono/stereo switch, can't we?

Great Music...Bad Mastering Choice
I can't say enough about the Kenton Band and the quality of their music...Fantastic !!! I am not happy with the excuse Capitol has given for this Mono remaster...after all, Stan's own label Creative World chose to re-issue this in Stereo in the early 70's. If the Stereo masters were good enough for Stan, why not the Capitol engineers? At least put both Stereo and Mono on the same disc...let the listener decide what is best.

5 stars music content, 4 stars recording
Recently, on an e-mail list I belong to, comparisons of recording quality have been made of Capitol/Blue Note reissue CDs with some from Columbia. They were unfavourable and one lister uttered a moan of anguish because "Back to Balboa" has only been done in mono. However, I heartily recommend the CD anyway. Suppress your epicurean tendencies and don't miss this wonderful music. For those of you who were around and digging Kentonia in those days, it will provide an evocative experience, and if you have the misfortune to be young, and have missed the period when this music was made, dig it now - you'll like it. If you aspire to play saxes, trumpet, trombone or whatever , listen to the solos by Bill Perkins, Sam Noto, Lennie Niehaus, Archie LeCoque and others - and despair. You'll never make it. These perfrmances are truly marvellous, generated by one of Kenton's excellent bands. And the price is very reasonable - just under 11.50 American including handling and mail charges. Forgo a lunch, and refresh your soul. Peter R.

Back to Balboa Is What It Purports To Be
The sound of Stan Kenton's "Back to Balboa" is different from the sound of the Mono LP. The CD has "depth," but has a "booming" sound coming from inside the Rendezvous Ballroom at Balboa Beach, California, where it was recorded. It was an empty ballroom, and Stan like the sound of the big, booming band....the soloists are heard much better, but the bass dominates the sound....Capitol Records deserves credit for re-issuing material of the Stan Kenton orchestras.
