Pinback Summer in Abaddon Vinyl LP (2004)
I Found What I Wanted/Unissued & Rare Fame Masters CD music A little research on the title of Pinback's 2004 album SUMMER IN ABADDON reveals the literal meaning of Abaddon as "complete destruction or ruin," as well as being the Hebrew name for the demon guarding the pits of Hell. It could, of course, also be referring to the small township in Pennsylvania.
The album itself is also full of contrasts, meshing crisp, mid-tempo math-rock rhythms and pristine guitar work with rather cryptic and unsettling lyrics, one part journal entry and one part jagged-romance manifesto. Copious syncopation and vocal harmonies hint at mid-era Sunny Day Real Estate, though Pinback's bass-heavy melodies owe more of a debt to slowcore heroes Bedhead. The group approaches the emotional peaks of early Modest Mouse with the stiff-and-staggered delivery of "Non Photo-Blue" and "Syracuse," but the drums-and-piano arrangement of "The Yellow Ones" hints at a darker direction towards the end of the album. Perhaps not quite dark enough to verge on the aforementioned pits of Hell, but certainly enough to seem pitch black against the idyllic atmosphere of the ...

Beach Fossils Beach Fossils Vinyl LP (2010)
I Found What I Wanted/Unissued & Rare Fame Masters album for sale In 2010, there were a lot of bands doing roughly the same thing as Beach Fossils. Namely, a lo-fi take on the indie pop sound with loads of reverb, guitar parts reminiscent of surf music, simple-to-rudimentary drums, and innocent, almost deadpan vocals. Many of the bands are on the same label, Captured Tracks. Many of them are one-person outfits, as well. In this case the one person being Dustin Payseur. Of all the bands operating in this general area, Beach Fossils is one of the best and their self-titled record works as one of the early landmarks of the sound. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why, though it helps that Payseur's songs are instantly catchy and his voice betrays no smirkiness, just pure innocence. The focus and clarity of his playing and arrangement also give the record an originality that lets the record stand out from the hissing crowd. No one else (apart from the Drums and their naggingly omnipresent "Let's Go Surfing" or maybe Surfer Blood with "Swim") has written a song as radio-ready as "Daydream." More impressively, that song is only one of many shining examples of on-the-cheap pop that hits like the blunt end of an axe. Beach Fossils may be very 2010 but they aren't just along for the ride, they're driving the bandwagon. ~ Tim Sendra

Asian Takeaways Vinyl LP (2001)
I Found What I Wanted/Unissued & Rare Fame Masters album for sale ASIAN TAKEAWAYS is a compilation of Asian pop music from the 60's and 70's.
From the backstreet haunts and neon-lit clubs of the Far East comes this collection of '60s Asian pop. And while Japan is deservedly famous for regurgitating modern Western musical traditions, places like Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Korea have also churned out a healthy supply of ditties brimming over with refashioned bubblegum, lounge, Latin, rock, and jazz elements. The 20 cuts here showcase several talented chanteuses from all of these locales, with a bevy of trad/pop hybrids to choose from. On the more traditional end, there's Korea's Chung-Ae Ahn and Japan's Shojijii, who both lightly shade native tonalities with some modern touches. More intriguing, though, are cinematic workouts like the Malaysian-styled Bond theme by Yao Su-Yong, a fuzz guitar and brass romp by Chang Loo, and some recast rhumba, compliments of the Chung Sisters. Add to that a taste of spaghetti Western music, some polka, and a wealth of mod touches, and you have a fine mix for your next global lounge party. ~ Stephen Cook
Performers include: Jing Ting, Yoon Il-loh, Chung-ae Ahn, Yao Su-Uong, Chang Loo, Chang Siao Ying, Che-Hong Beck, Thu Su Yung, Yiu Peng, Wang-Li, Shung Sister.
