Bon Operatit! Sensatiable CD (2013)
Francois Devienne: Sonatas for oboe & b.c.; Sonatas for bassoon & b.c. Formed in 2009, the New Orleans opera trio, Bon Operatit!, oddly began singing on the infamous Bourbon Street to standing room only audiences at the site of the old French Opera House which stood as one of the oldest opera houses in New Orleans for over 60 years before burning to the ground in 1919. The group consists of Lauren Mouney Gisclair (soprano), Mary Penick Akin (mezzo soprano), and Jesse Nolan (tenor) who all entertain audiences with their niche genre of musical selections in the fun, informal, social ambiance that New Orleans locals are so typically accustomed to. Their easygoing, likable personalities combined with their ability to deliver showstopping arias, duets, and ensemble numbers made them an instant sensation.
While the trio typically promotes themselves as a vivacious yet laid-back group of artists, Bon Operatit!'s true musicianship and artistry is really showcased in their latest 14-track CD which features over 12 New Orleans musicians. With musical arrangements by Dr. Frankie Kelly who also lends her magical fingers to the recording on piano, the CD also features the talents of violinist, Joseph Meyer, concertmaster of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra; oboist, Jane Gabka, Assistant Principal oboist with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra; violinist, Harry Hardin; pianist, Carol Rausch, Chorus Master/Music Administrator/Education Director for the New Orleans Opera Association; pianist, Janna Ernst; pianist, Jean-Paul Gisclair; guest vocalist, Jacob Penick; and guest vocalist, Joseph Akin. All 12 musicians come together to offer a delightful 46 minutes of opera, musical theater, and contemporary crossover music favorites that is sure to captivate listeners.
