"Yet each man kills the thing he loves, By each let this be heard, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword" Oscar Wilde In this film the coward does it with an arrow Sebastiane film. The ending is foreshadowed in the beginning when the Emperor Diocletian amuses himself by watching his entourage dispatch two teenage boys - one is choked, the other evidently stabbed in the heart Sebastiane review. The entire movie is a variation on the rip-tease, a genre in which sharp weapons threaten bare flesh - exposed throats, rippling heart-beats - but the final thrust never happens. The traditional story of Saint Sebastian follows this pattern. On Diocletian's discovery that he is converting his fellow Roman soldiers to Christianity, he is stripped down to a loin-cloth, bound to a tree, shot with arrows and left for dead. But he isn't. A widow (Saint Irene) finds that he is alive and nurses him back to health. Thus the ruling motif among the many thousands of images of the saint is that the apparently lethal arrow just misses the boy's jugular or nicks his heart. Rip-tease. But this movie takes a pagan, not a Christian view. The saint's execution is ordered, not by the emperor but by his frustrated would-be lover Severus, who lacks the will to rape him. Instead, he strips him naked while he and the other soldiers, also naked, shoot arrows into him until the final orgasmic moment when one unambiguously penetrates his heart. Rolling his eyes heavenwards, then wilting like a frostbitten flower, Sebastian conveys his agony and ecstasy as Severus "takes" him the only way he can, displacing his sexual desire upwards to the hairless chest. On the remote deserted Sardinia of antiquity where most of the action takes place, there is no sign of Saint Irene. This Sebastian is not a double for Christ or even Apollo, but akin to other pagan boys who die, such as Adonis and Hyacinthus, at the hands of those who love them.
