Paul Desmond Easy Living CD (1965)
Fender Custom Shop 2013 Calendar Even though the alto saxophonist Paul Desmond is justly celebrated for his long tenure in the Dave Brubeck Quartet, he led a quite different kind of quartet of his own with the fine guitarist Jim Hall and MJQ drummer Connie Kay in the early to mid-'60s. Together they produced a series of understated, lyrical LPs for RCA that showcased Desmond's lithe improvisations (and Hall's perfectly apt accompaniment) on a variety of standards and bossa nova tunes. While it might neglect the bossa nova side, the 1990 compilation EASY LIVING is a fine representative sampling of this underrated quartet's above-average output, featuring cool, urbane interpretations of highly melodic tunes like "Here's That Rainy Day" and "When Joanna Loved Me." Another highlight is the darting, allusive reading of Cole Porter's "All Through The Night," in which the subtle altoist proves again why he was rightly considered one of the greatest musicians of his generation.
Recorded between June 1963 and June 1965. Produced by George Avakian.
Personnel: Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Jim Hall (guitar); Eugene Wright, Eugene Cherico, Percy Heath (bass); Connie Kay (drums).

Suzi Quatro A's B'S & Rarities CD (2005) (Import)
Fender Custom Shop 2013 Calendar This 20-track album covers Suzi's 1972-75 period, featuring 11 titles available on CD for the first time, four of which are previously un-issued masters, including her 1974 semi-orchestrral, 11-minute opus 'Angel Flight'. 'Rolling Stone' features Peter Frampton on guitar and Errol Brown on backing vocals. EMI. 2004.
It seems strange to see the output of Mickie Most's RAK label finally being taken seriously by record labels as well as collectors, 30-plus years after the imprint established itself as the epitome of disposable pop tunes. Yet EMI's ongoing As, Bs & Rarities series offers nothing less than the same thorough treatment that any other, more hallowed, label could expect. The format is essentially the same throughout: a gathering up of every RAK single (A-sides and B-sides) released by a given band, with the remainder of the CD filled with choice outtakes and oddities -- a treatment that Suzi Quatro has long demanded. Listeners could hardly be surprised, after all, as hits collection after hits collection has descended from the skies, to be faced with one more go-round for "Can the Can," "48 Crash," "Daytona Demon," et al. -- but it ...

Kid606 Lost in the Game CD (2012)
Fender Custom Shop 2013 Calendar Starting off as a spazzy post-adolescent beatmaker, Miguel De Pedro, aka Kid606, built his house on frenzied breakcore, gnarled mash-ups, and a petulant flippancy toward all the unwritten rules and codes of the electronic music scene. Lost in the Game comes more than ten years into ...
