Sam Cooke was a giant not just in the soul world, but in the larger scheme of American music. Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 CD music His melding of soul, gospel, and pop was as trenchant as it was revolutionary and influential. Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 music CDs This unbeatable 30-song compilation touches on every aspect of this phenomenally gifted singer-songwriter's career. Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 songs The romantic croon of "You Send Me" shares space with the mournful "Sad Mood," the romping "Twistin' the Night Away," and the moving social/spiritual statement "A Change Is Gonna Come" (this compilation is one of the rare collections to have this stirring and sought-after track). Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 album For pure fun, it's hard to beat the humor-filled "Another Saturday Night." Perhaps the master stroke, though, is "Havin' a Party." As no less esteemed a personage than Bruce Springsteen once observed, it's an ostensibly celebratory song that seems to bear a deep sadness via Cooke's vocal performance, a sense of laughing to keep from crying. At the same time, Cooke manages the considerable feat of making loneliness sound like fun. Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 CD music contains a single disc. ...See Full Description

| The great die young.... Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 music CDs A wonderful collection of songs from one of the true masters who was sadly taken long before his time. From his early gospel days (Touch the hem of his garment) to the swinging "Twisting the night away", his voice is one of the greatest ever to be recorded. We are lucky that we have this beautiful music captured forever to listen to time and time again. "Bring it to me" is one of my favourite songs ever and I am moved every time I hear it, Sams voice was amazing. Who knows what he would have gave us if he hadn't been taken from us in 1964. | No longer available as a Hybrid SACD!! Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 songs Just a warning to other buyers. As of March 2006 ABKCO is no longer releasing Hybrid SACDs. This disc, as well as their entire Rolling Stones remasters, are now just regular CDs. Unfortunately the packaging still shows the "DSD" logo and the catalog numbers have not changed. If you want the hybrid SACD version, you'll have to find a store that has old stock before the March 2006 change. I only discovered this when I ordered a copy of this disc and found that it was a regular CD. You can tell the difference because a hybrid SACD is light gold (like a DVD) and the inner ring of the disc has two circular UPC-like imprints. A regular CD is silver and will only have a single UPC-like ring. By Keith (Santa Monica, CA) This review is for a different format. |

| A Real Good Package Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 album I wasn't sure about this when I saw it advertised but am glad to have made the purchase. Sam Cooke wasn't one of my alltime favorites, but he did have a good sound and style and it's well transferred to this disc of over 80 minutes. Good for ABKO. Really good value and superb presentation. Nice to hear "cupid" again especially. Her name was Rae when that was around in my teenage years and she hit it off with someone else so cupid's arrow missed my scene.
