Glad Rag Doll album by Diana Krall was released Sep 25, 2012 on the Verve label. For only the second time in her career, jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall deviates from her tried, true m.o. of covering easily identifiable jazz standards. On Glad Rag Doll she teams with producer T-Bone Burnett and his stable of studio aces. Glad Rag Doll music CDs Here the two-time Grammy winner covers mostly vaudeville and jazz tunes written in the 1920s and '30s, some relatively obscure. Glad Rag Doll songs Most of the music here is from her father's collection of 78-rpm records. Krall picked 35 tunes from that music library and gave sheet music to Burnett. He didn't reveal his final selections until they got into the studio. Given their origins, these songs remove the sheen of detached cool that is one of Krall's vocal trademarks. Check the speakeasy feel on opener "We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye," with Marc Ribot's airy chords, Jay Bellerose's loose shuffle, and Dennis Crouch's strolling upright bass. Do you really think the music and looks are that good?
Referring to the above review, all I have to say is: "You have got to be kidding, right?" Diana Krall should only deviate from her "tried and true" formula on her own time. This is why I buy her CD's. Don't make your "changes" a surprise AFTER I buy the CD - - which I did based upon how much I loved Diana's past musical stylings. I don't like it when an artist says, "Surprise! I changed without telling you! Now you're stuck." Oh, and Diana, you're not that pretty-looking and my children don't need to see a near-naked woman on my coffee table. If I wanted to see you "dressed" in this manner, I'd get a subscription to Playboy. But, I had no choice because I thought I would like this CD based upon your past stylings. But, as it turns out, I liked neither. Put your clothes back on and let your husband see you like this - - not the rest of the world - - that is, unless you'd like to see me similarly dressed. Just ask; I'll send you photos.
