Quiet Man review Product Description
Sean Thornton (John Wayne) in an American boxer who swears off fighting after he accidentally kills an opponent in the ring. Returning to the Irish town of his youth, he purchases the home of his birth and finds happiness when he falls in love with the fiery Mary Kate (Maureen O'Hara). But her insistence that Sean conduct his courtship in a proper Irish manner with matchmaker Barry Fitzgerald along for the ride as "chaperone" is but one obstacle to their future happiness: the other is her brother (Victor McLaglen), who spitefully refuses to give his consent to their marriage, or to honor the tradition of paying a dowry to the husband. The Quiet Man won a total of two Academy Awards® including Best Director (Ford) and Best Cinematography and received five more nomination including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (McLaglen). Special features include a Printed Booklet: Joseph McBride on THE QUIET MAN Adapted from his biography: SEARCHING FOR JOHN FORD, The Making of THE QUIET MAN (1992) Written and hosted by Leonard Maltin - Includes interviews with Michael Wayne, Toni Wayne LaCara and Andrew V. McLaglen
An American boxer retires to his native Ireland where he tames the town bully and a strong-willed woman.
One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American. But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate. Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara. The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch. John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale.
Shot in Technicolor.
Additional cast members: Eileen Crowe (Mrs. Playfair), May Craig (Woman), Charles Fitzsimmons (Forbes), Sean McGlory (Owen Glynn), Joseph O'Dea (Guard), Kevin Lawless (Fireman), Paddy O'Donnell (Porter) and Web Overlander (Station Master).
Francis Cugat was the Technicolor consultant.

| Great Classic For John Wayne fans or not the The Quiet Man is a super movie classic to be enjoyed by any age. By antonio-duran (el paso, tx) This review is for a different format. |
| Terrible DVD The movie a classic, one of the best of the best. However, the transfer on this DVD is very bad. This is the second attempt and the Collectors Addition is a flop. I bought this very same edition at a mall store and it too is very bad. The vidio is not clear. The VHS I have of this movie is far better in every way. How sad. | Excellent Movie I am not normally a fan of this type of movie, but the story line and views of old Ireland and people was great. The quality of the DVD was also good. Better than the yearly TV version since it had not interruption. The DVD adders were also well worth watching. By Henry (Toronto Canada) This review is for a different format. |
| Memories, beauty and laughter One of the prettiest and most breathtaking pictures with Ireland as a backdrop. Not a complicated plot, love conquers all. The hero gets the girl and everyone smiles. God bless us all. By tony.gregory (Gadsden AL) This review is for a different format. |
