Dora the Explorer: Dora's Butterfly Ball movie The first full-length underground feature to be shot in Cuba under Fidel Castro, this intense, gripping drama comes out with a decidedly anti-communist message, while depicting the stories of the three women at its center with a compassionate, human touch. First-time director Joel Cano uses a documentary feel to lend immediacy to the story, which follows the three characters over the course of a very eventful week. Maria, a poor rural woman, is distraught in the wake of her daughter's disappearance. Norma is a newscaster, a member of the comfortable upper class who nevertheless becomes fed up with government propaganda and refuses to broadcast untrue news. Nieves dreams of becoming a glamorous cabaret dancer, but instead makes a living in an illegal pig slaughtering house; that is, until her boss unexpectedly fires her. The widely divergent paths of these three women manage to overlap as their destinies play out under a repressive communist regime, and the story dances between levity and seriousness in an apt depiction of the instability of their worlds.
