California Blues Redux songs Product Information
California Blues Redux album for sale by Spirit was released Jul 16, 2013 on the Floating World label. Spirit's final album, California Blues, was released one month before bandleader Randy California's accidental death. California Blues Redux buy CD music Since then, under the auspices of California's family, Mick Skidmore has compiled posthumous albums from the singer/guitarist's extensive archive of unreleased live and studio recordings. California Blues Redux is not, as one might expect, simply a "deluxe edition," adding bonus tracks, outtakes, and live recordings in a manner that has become familiar in the music business. California Blues Redux songs Rather, Skidmore, who clearly has grown comfortable in his role as California and Spirit's authorized reissue producer, has chosen to re-conceive the original disc -- and then add bonus tracks and live recordings. California Blues Redux album for sale In his liner notes, he calls California Blues "a compromise and a little uneven," and mentions what he feels are its "many extraneous overdubs." California Blues Redux CD music He has removed those overdubs in order to create "a rawer, less produced album." He has also deleted tracks he feels don't fit, notably a live recording of a Spirit cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Red House" (another one is included on the second disc of live tracks) and a "bonus" section of rare material (some of it by the original 1967 configuration of Spirit) that had closed the disc. All of this is problematic, of course. Producers of posthumous recordings such as Norman Petty (with Buddy Holly) and Alan Douglas (with Hendrix) were criticized for adding overdubs to previously unreleased tracks. Skidmore has in a sense done the opposite -- he has removed overdubs from previously released tracks. But the point is the same: in each case, the producer is second-guessing the artist, who isn't around to object. ...See Full Description

California Blues Redux songs Randy California and Spirit didn't always get the breaks during his life, but Mick Skidmore has rectified that situation posthumously. The latest in a series of releases going into the archives of Randy California, "California Blues" takes the original album and revamps nearly every cut while giving a much better slate of bonus cuts. In addition, there is an entire bonus CD with 80 minutes of live material featured on the same album. The original was pretty good to start with but Randy seemed to be trying for as much pop as blues. The remixing has toned down the crossover potential while toughening up the sound - bringing Randy's vastly underrated guitar playing to the front - while also showing the contributions of both Matt and Rachael Andes to better light. In particular, Rachael Andes' vocals are highlighted especially well on "California Blues" and "Call On Me" The new song, "Stone Lover", is an excellent contribution and perhaps the funkiest song now on the first disc. Unfortunately this version of the band never toured, so Mick Skidmore went to the vaults to find eight excellent cuts, three at over fifteen minutes. The interaction between band members is excellent, particularly long time drummer Ed Cassidy and Randy. "Song For Clyde" must be the longest solo I have ever heard Randy take, and it is great to hear him play at full speed on this and "Red House", which is a great improvement on the version originally released on the album. My only complaints are minor and personal. Some of the live material has the occasional bum note, which can't be helped, and the original album was a patched together job typical of most of the later Spirit releases. I would have loved an entire album with the Andes, but unfortunately that can never be. What we have is uniformly excellent and great value for the money.
