L.A. in the early 1930's: racism, poverty, and disease color the Bunker Hill neighborhood of L. A. where Arturo Bandini, a fledgling Italian-American writer, has arrived from Colorado to write the great Los Angeles novel. He is down to his last nickel after some time of not being very successful in his writing. He visits a local eatery where he orders a cup of coffee, served by Camilla Lopez, beautiful, self-possessed, and Mexican. Arturo gets advice, encouragement, and an occasional check from his publisher, so he keeps writing and he keeps seeing Camilla. He seems mean to her for no apparent reason, so the relationship sputters. Remember, this happens at a time when ‘politically correct’ was not a phrase. Collin Farrell is in the male lead (actually Irish) and has absolutely no Irish accent and Salma Hayek in the female lead with her natural accent and cadence of the English language make this story very believable. Donnald Southerland plays a supporting part and is invaluable to this movie and it’s outcome. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is or ever was hopelessly in love against all odds.
