This three-CD set from the comedy outfit features 72 tracks, with appearances from Roger Ruskin Spear, Viv Stanshall and others.
The Bonzo Dog Band's comedic styling worked for two reasons: one is that all seven bandmembers were superb musicians, two is that they knew what was funny, and when humor could be best-implemented. This collection of the Bonzo Dog Band's work (here featured in its entirety) is an amazingly enjoyable album, despite the huge number of different styles that the band experiments with. Opening with the debut album, this release chronicles all of the Bonzo's work from then until their 1972 reunion album Let's Make Up and Be Friendly. Considering the diversity of the Bonzo Dog Band, the album makes for a surprisingly consistent listen. The early works are the best in terms of originality and quality (moments of outright genius are commonplace on the material taken from Gorilla, The Doughnuts in Granny's Greenhouse, and Tadpoles), and the later era is at worst average. Admittedly, the album takes a big dive after the stupidly underrated Keynsham, but before that turning point, The Bonzo Dog Band really proves why the Bonzos are often hailed as the finest comedy outfit ever. ~ Ben Davies
Import exclusive compilation for the British psychedelic act that combined elements of rock & comedy to great success. The Intro comprises the groups first two albums, Gorilla and The Doughnut In Granny's Greenhouse and recounts their history up to 1968. The Outro combines Tadpoles and Keynsham and continues the story to 1970, when the band was dissolved. Dog Ends features their reunion album, Let's Make Up And Be Friendly, as well as several non-album releases, some solo material and a text which brings their adventure up to date. Three standard jewelcases housed in a slipcase. Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) it's worth listening to all 72 songs I first heard about the Bonzos from watching Neil Innes (piano, guitar) perform 'I'm the Urban Spaceman' on a Monty Python video. 'I'm the Urban Spaceman' was their only big hit (it reach #5 in the charts in the UK), but almost all of their songs are really good and really funny. The Bonzos are a comedy band that has styles ranging from semi-vaudevillian, jazzy, bluesy, and there even some similarities with The Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper's' style of rock. This collection is massive, 3 discs, 72 songs. It contains their 5 albums (including their reunion album), some singles, and some songs from later projects after they broke up. One song on the third disc showcases Eric Clapton performing with an after project of Vivian Stanshall (tuba). All of their comedy is very much like Monty Python, Neil Innes later collaborated with Eric Idle to create The Rutles (the Beatles parody band). If you're a fan of They Might be Giants but also like '60s music this band is perfect. Buying this collection will definitely be worth it. Submitted by Jerry (Lansing, NY) Was This Review Helpful? They're still good listening THe sound is great. It's easier to pick out some of the lyrics than it was on the old History of the Bonzos album. It's nice to hear the songs in their origianl order again. I'd forgotten the segue between Monster Mash and I'm the Urban Spaceman. I just hope it lasts longer than previous Bonzo albums. Roommates "borrowed" my LPs years ago and the kids lost the History CD. Submitted by a reviewer (Gilroy, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I highly recommend it! I just ordered this box set and I must say - it's the best, freshest music I've heard in a long time. It's like a Fellini movie and you don't know what's going to happen next - Talk about psychedelic... If you like the Rutles, you will appreciate Neil Innes pop song prowess and if you like the humor of Monty Python, you will see that the Bonzo Dog Band was a major influence. I highly recommend it. The sound quality is superb - EMI before No Noise. Submitted by a reviewer (Beverly, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Can't believe I waited this long! I can't believe that I waited this long (2005) to make an effort to listen to the music and comedy stylings of the Bonzo Dog Band. I've been a fan of Monty Python since the early 1970s. Neil Innes' musical and acting contributions to Monty Python have always been apparent. I loved the Rutles when the TV movie and LP came out. So here I am just now listening to this fine three CD set! Actually, what got me to purchase this CD set was the fact that the Bonzo Dog Band are a constant onscreen presence on the DVD release of the British TV show "Do Not Adjust You Set", which I purchased in order to see four of the six members of Monty Python. Thus, I had the extra bonus of seeing and hearing lots of the Bonzo Dog Band. At that point I felt it was finally time to hear their recordings on CD.
This group demonstrates a major developement in British group humor in that the previous noteworthy British comedy group, Beyond the Fringe, which had broken up just two years prior to Bonzo releasing its first record, was around just too early to have a psychedelic vibe whereas the Bonzo Dog Band is awash in it.
The British accents and references are so strong I get the impression that this group aimed at a domestic audience and may not have set sites on international acclaim. Dunno. Just an idea.

That's nice Eric ! A special collection.. like a cross between Monty Python and Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention, with the flavor of Spike Jones.. Not a musical landmark by any means.. but some cool, funny stuff here... Enjoy ! Submitted by GeeBee (Manchester, Ct, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
