Music For Jazz Orchestra
$14.59 Personnel: Marcin Wasilewski (piano); Marcin Wasilewski; Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass); Michal Miskiewicz (drums). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (03/2004). Photographer: Andrzej Tyszko. Jazz fans the world over have become familiar with pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz because they make up three quarters of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. Working with Stanko live since 1993 when they were in their teens, they are now his studio band as well, and perform on his two recent, widely acclaimed ECM outings, The Soul of Things (2002) and Suspended Night (2004). This rhythm section is a prime reason for the success of those stellar recordings. ...
| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Music For Jazz Orchestra
$13.49 Personnel: Antonio Hart (flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Mark Gross (alto saxophone); Chris Potter (tenor saxophone); Gary Smulyan (baritone saxophone); Duane Eubanks, Alex Sipiagin, Taylor Haskins (trumpet, flugelhorn); Josh Roseman, Robin Eubanks, Jonathan Arons (trombone); Steve Nelson (vibraphone, marimba); Dave Holland (double bass); Billy Kilson (drums). This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine ...
| | Wayne Shorter Beyond The Sound Barrier CD (2005)
Music For Jazz Orchestra
$15.59 Personnel: Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Danilo Perez (piano); John Patitucci (bass instrument); Brian Blade (drums). Recorded live on three different continents (Europe, America, and Asia) from 2002-2004, Beyond the Sound Barrier finds Wayne Shorter leading the same acoustic-oriented post-bop quartet he led on his 2001 recording, Footprints Live!; the veteran tenor and soprano saxophonist is joined by pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade. But if Beyond the Sound Barrier should be considered a sequel to Footprints Live!, it is far from a carbon copy. While Footprints Live! contained several Shorter pieces that have become jazz standards (including "Atlantis," "Footprints," and "Juju"), Beyond the Sound Barrier places ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Music For Jazz Orchestra
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right on November 29, 1957, at Carnegie Hall. The John Coltrane on this date is far more assured than he had been four months earlier ...
| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Music For Jazz Orchestra
$13.59 Dave Holland (1~Bass): Dave Holland (double bass); Chris Potter (saxophone); Steve Nelson (vibraphone); Nate Smith (drums); Robin Eubanks. Personnel: Robin Eubanks (trombone); Steve Nelson Quartet (vibraphone, marimba, tambourine); Nate Smith (drums). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (12/2005). Photographer: Ulli Gruber. One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, ...
| | Paul Motian Time And Again CD (2007)
Music For Jazz Orchestra
$15.05 Composer: Paul Motain. Personnel: Paul Motian (drums); Paul Motian; Bill Frisell (guitar); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (05/2006). Photographer: Arne Reimer. In a continuation of the collaboration they'd frequently returned to since beginning it in 1981, the jazz drummer Paul Motian, the guitarist Bill Frisell, and the saxophonist Joe Lovano made a welcome return to the recording studio in 2007. This freewheeling set includes several original compositions by Motian and one by Lovano, as well as tunes by Thelonious Monk, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. In 2005, Paul Motian returned to ECM as a leader after a long hiatus. ...
