A family moves into a Long Island house that has a disturbing past. Soon after they move in, they too believe the stories of the house being haunted. Ooze comes out of the walls, doors mysteriously and violently swing open, and flies descend. After priests' attempts to exorcise the house do not stop the unexplained and horrible occurences; the family moves out, 28 days after they moved in. A real-life haunted house becomes a frontpage story in this tale of a family whose Long Island dream home becomes an oozing, horrific nightmare. The brutal murder of six people just one year previous causes the new tenants some restless nights, to say the least! THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is based on the "non-fiction" book by Jay Anson. Academy Award nominations: Best Original Score. "The Amityville Horror" is based on an allegedly true story about a house in Amityville, Long Island. The town of Amityville did not want the film shot there, so it was shot in Tom's River, New Jersey, instead. Many Amityville residents discredit the stories of the house's possesion, and the family that moved in after the family depicted in the film lived there with no trouble.
By 1982, this film made Filmways (its distribution company) $35 million, the most at that point in time for an independent feature.

One if the best Indi films I have ever seen! There is a reason why this movie became such a cult classic even by today's standards. THis relatively low budget horror flick has awesome acting. Really awesome acting. The acting made this movie work more than anything else in the movie. This movie though should not have gotten an R rating because there really is not much bad things to see. Some blood, ugly looking faces does not generate an R rating. But movies like The Grudge which just came out, and the Haunting, and almost any movie that has a haunted house was aspired by this movie. Great movie to see. This is the creation of what you call "cheap scares" as whenever something happens, even just a stare, loud music pops up to groove you. For the most part it works. Even today there are some scenes in the movie that still make me jump. Nice movie, 4 stars. Could have been much more. Since it was rated R, why not go the extra mileage and have lots of blood and gore? Would have made this movie a bigger classic. Submitted by puertoricandj (buffalo, ny usa) Was This Review Helpful? hillarious This movie was the funniest horror movie ever. I give it a one because it was supposed to be scary. Had it been in the comedy genre it would have received a four from me. Sorry for the bad rating, but giant possoms outside a window are far from scary. Submitted by a reviewer (Loveland, CO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Amityville Horror film
$23.39 After nearly two decades of successful detours into mature thrillers (THE GIFT, A SIMPLE PLAN) and superhero blockbusters (the Spider-Man series), director Sam Raimi returns--full tilt--to his scrappy horror roots with DRAG ME TO HELL. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, a soft-spoken Southern girl with a good heart, a PhD-toting boyfriend (Justin Long), and a job as a loan officer at a bank just outside of Los Angeles. When evicting a vile and negligent old woman named Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) seems to be the only way to secure an important promotion, Christine pushes her moral flexibility about as far as it can go (not very far at all) only to dearly pay the price as the recipient of a rather nasty curse. The next three days of Christine’s life amount to an unimaginable endurance test in which she is subject to physical and psychological torture while a terrifying demon draws ever closer to take her to hell, where she would burn for eternity.
Raimi manages to keep the feverish awfulness of DRAG ME's central concept palpable while layering on his distinctly disturbing and exhilaratingly kinetic macabre-meets-slapstick portraiture, and the result is an efficient celebration of the art of horror movies that’s campy, scary, and fun. Similar to HBO’s classic TALES FROM THE CRYPT series, HELL feels like a living, breathing EC comic. While it may come as a minor shock that Bruce Campbell, the beloved mouthpiece of the EVIL DEAD franchise, is nowhere to be found in this unabashed horror-comedy, Christine is an excellent twist on Raimi's genre-hero archetype. Fans will get a kick out of seeing her inexplicably leave her gob agape as putrid projectiles pour in, and hearing her, after a bit of pushing, spout a Campbell-ism or two ("I’m gonna get me some!").

Amityville Horror review
$13.59 James Brolin stars as Sheriff Wade Parent, a man who must stop a large, black 2-door sedan from terrorizing a small New Mexican town. No one knows the car's origin, who is driving it, or how to stop it. After it kills three people, the Sheriff must find a way to stop this seemingly indestructible machine. Who is behind the wheel? Could it be...Satan? That may be the case given that late Church of Satan leader Anton LaVey was given a 'Technical Advisor' credit on the film! Though it was greeted by a chorus of jeers when it surfaced in 1977, THE CAR is an oddly gripping and altogether unconventional horror film. From the director of A MAN CALLED HORSE and a script co-written by Michael Butler, writer of PALE RIDER.

| | Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 DVD (1988)
Amityville Horror video
$12.85 Beginning just hours after the original HELLRAISER ended, HELLBOUND finds young Kristy (Laurence) waking up in a mental institution because she insisted on describing her parents murderers as pain-loving demons from hell to the authorities. Unfortunately, she has been placed in the car of Dr. Channard, who has devoted his life to solving the Lament Configuration, the key to the doorway of hell, and now, with Kristy, he believes he has found another key. Resuscitating the skinless corpse of her stepmother, Julia, Dr. Channard succeeds in opening a doorway to hell, one that Julia, Channard, Kristy, and her mute friend Tiffany all travel through.
Based on a story by Clive Barker, HELLBOUND is both a continuation of the original as well as a much different take on its story and universe. Here, the film fashions itself after an ALICE IN WONDERLAND type fairy tale as it focuses on Kristy and Tiffany's adventures in hell as well as on the lives of the Cenobites. Infamously gory, surreal, and often horrifying, HELLBOUND is a satisfying sequel to one of the most original horror films of the 1980s.
In 1988, it emerged as the shocking follow-up to the film that redefined the face of horror. Two decades later, it remains one of the most brutally original sequels in horror film history. Relive the nightmare of pleasure and pain as the puzzle box unleashes the depraved hunger of the Cenobites, the unholy birth of the Leviathan Configuration and even the horrific origin of Pinhead (Doug Bradley), Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and Kenneth Cranham co-star in this hit sequel from executive producer Clive Barker that experiences the flesh like no other.
