George Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is a low-budget, homegrown classic that had great difficulty finding a distributor at the time of its release in 1968, and has since become one of the most influential horror films of all time. (Aside from its visceral impact years before realistic gore became the fashion, the film is also important for its portrayal of a black man as the protagonist during a time when race was an extremely sensitive issue in the United States.) The plot is simple: seven people secluded in a Pennsylvania farmhouse face relentless attacks by reanimated corpses seeking to eat their flesh. The group, which includes a married couple and their daughter, a pair of young lovers, and an African-American man, try to keep their sanity as the living dead keep trying to enter the house. Radio news reports tell of the plague taking over the eastern United States, while the ever-decreasing band of survivors rapidly loses ground in the battle to both keep peace with one another and stay alive.

Theatrical release: October 1, 1968. Filmed in 1964 in the countryside around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1999. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was director George Romero's first feature film. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD produced two sequels, DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) and DAY OF THE DEAD (1985); one remake, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990); and countless imitations. William Hinzman, who appeared as the Cemetery Zombie at the beginning of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, also served as cinematographer on Romero's THE CRAZIES. The film was made for $114,000.

Night Of The Living Dead Quotes/Excerpts:

"Beat 'em or burn 'em. They go up pretty easy." - Zombie hunter on television news coverage "They're coming to get you, Barbara!" - Johnny (Russell Streiner) taunting Barbara (Judith O' Dea) in the cemetery, just before he is attacked by a zombie

4 stars A must have classic in 3D!!!
This was the first time I saw George Romeroīs movie, and sincerely, i liked it a lot, I donīt care itīs just black & white, but with all that restrictions, no special effect, etc.. He made a great movie that became a classic, and this 3D version, sincerely was the best choice to see it.

4 stars The classic zombie movie
"Night Of The Living Dead" was made in 1968, more than 30 years ago! Presented here with over the top quality, this is a simple story of a group of cannibal zombies attack everybody in sight. Very well shot and with lots of gory scenes, this movie is an almost obligatory purchase for all horror fans.

Dr. Norman Boyle (Paolo Malco), of the New York Historical Society, accepts a research assignment abandoned by a colleague who has committed suicide. The project requires the researcher to temporarily take up residence in a New England mansion along with his wife, Lucy (Katherine MacColl) and their son, Bob (Giovanni Frezza). Norman discovers his colleague had become consumed with the history of the home's original owner, a turn-of-the-Century surgeon named Dr. Freudstein who possessed a fondness for illegal experiments. Further investigation reveals Freudstein had found a way to stay alive by using cells derived from fresh human blood. The Boyles find out the hard way that the maggot-stuffed, undead doctor remains lurking in the shadows of the house, killing anybody who crosses his path. While the plot does at times lose itself to vagueness and the inexplicable, Italian director Lucio Fulci reinforces his "Godfather Of Gore" moniker as visceral sequences (human mutilation aplenty, along with a gut-wrenching decapitation) unfold before the camera in the maestro's customary extreme close-up style. Made during the height of his career, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY is one of Fulci's most admired favorites. A percentage of the film's popularity must also be credited to the inadvertently humorous English dubbing of Italian child star Giovanni Frezza's "Bob" character, performed by a much older female actress.

House On Haunted Hill/Last Man On Earth DVD  (1958)

Night Of The Living Dead movie DVD
DVD $3.75  4.1 stars
HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL: Vincent Price has one of his juiciest roles in this haunted-house thriller as millionaire playboy Frederick Loren, who invites five guests out to a genuine haunted house, offering them each $10,000 if they spend the night. Elisha Cook Jr. plays one of the guests, a nervous alcoholic who has been in this house before and witnessed some terrible things. Mr. Loren's beautiful but treacherous wife (Carol Ohmart) is also present--and might be out to kill Frederick during the course of the evening; then again, he might be out to kill her. Severed heads, a skeleton, an acid vat, ghostly screams, and a noose that creeps around on its own and strangles unsuspecting victims are just some of the treats in a film that has been spooking delighted audiences on late-night TV for decades. Producer-director William Castle (THE TINGLER) claimed this was filmed in a process called Emergo, which meant that at a key moment a glow-in-the-dark skeleton on a wire was rigged to sail over the audience's heads. The skeleton is long since gone, but the goofy thrills remain in this classic tale, from a script by Robb White. LAST MAN ON EARTH: Based on Richard Matheson's SF thriller I AM LEGEND, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is about a man who survives a global plague only to be stalked nightly by zombielike victims who call out his name. Vincent Price stars as Robert Morgan, a scientist who tried desperately to come up with a cure for an airborne virus that was killing people around the globe. Although he could not develop a serum in time to save his family, he himself seems to be immune from the disease. Thus, he is left to wander the streets by day, staking zombies, then barricading himself in his house each night as the zombies try to break in and kill him. Price is excellent in the role, going about his horrible business as if it were just another day: waking up and eating breakfast, putting on a suit, calmly staking the zombies, making dinner, listening to records at night.

Approaching the legendary German classic 1922 film NOSFERATU: EIN SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS by F.W. Murnau with his own unique sensibilities, Werner Herzog establishes a link between himself and the classic days of German cinema and in the process crafts a lush adaptation as well as a classic in its own right. Stark, symbolic cinematography and intensely stylized performances create what Herzog refers to as a different plane of reality, injecting the age-old tale of Count Dracula with a modern sense of mysticism, desire, and wonder. Frequent Herzog collaborator Klaus Kinski portrays the Dracula character with a silent intensity, tingeing the vampire's inhuman monstrosity with a deep sense of pathos and longing. Completing a stellar international cast are Bruno Ganz (a regular in the films of Wim Wenders) and French film star Isabelle Adjani, both giving subtle yet compelling performances as the formerly happy couple who fall prey to Dracula's lust for life and love. From the opening image of rows of openmouthed mummies and the repeated motif of a bat in slow-motion flight to beautiful scenic shots of European mountains and beaches, NOSFERATU is a visually stunning film, presenting visual tableaus taken directly from the original as well as those of Herzog's invention. The extreme stylization of the film recalls Herzog's similarly hypnotic and haunting film HEART OF GLASS--creating a wholly original film, that despite its differences maintains a strict and loving faithfulness to the original. Bruno Ganz, Isabelle Adjani, Klaus Kinski, Roland Topor - Director: Werner Herzog
