I am a great fan of this production, which I saw on T.V. several years ago, and since it was the same cast I thought I was ordering the same version. However, this recording was made at a performance in the round, the sound quality is below par. I preferred the version I saw on TV which must have been recorded for television. Still, it's great music and I think Kevin Kline's a hottie, and Linda Ronstadt doing "Poor Wandering One" displays her talent beautifully.

 Oh What Fun...
This version of the 1980 Joseph Papp Central Park musical is fun, and well staged. The voices are great, and the performances are right on the money. In my opinion it is better than the movie version which came out later. Although the quality of the DVD is similar to home video quality, it doesn't distract from the fun of watching this staged performance. If you enjoy filmed versions of staged musicals, this DVD should be part of your collection.

Good play. Bad copy
I love this play. But this copy is pathetic. It really is "home movie" quality of a stage performance. I disagree with the other reviewer. The movie version is better. The poor photography and sound quality really does distract from the play. Besides, you miss half of the funny stuff that is going on in the background in this version. The movie is better because not only is it filmed better, but the actors have been doing this longer and have more practice and a better better relationship with each other. The movie also has a stage set. So, it is really just like watching the play, just with a better set, bigger stage, no audiance, a more experianced cast, and better technical crew. It does still have the play effect, just not on stage with an audiance. I guess that it is all a matter of opinion and what you prefer. If you like "home movie" quality, than this is the copy for you. If not, I recomend the movie with Angela Landsberry as Ruth insed.

Pirates Of Penzance DVD Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all it's fun and glory in this production. Kevin Kline ( A Fish Called Wanda) sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstandt plays the lovely and virginal Mabel.
