Personnel: Siouxsie and the Banshees (vocals); Siouxsie Sioux (vocals); Robert Smith (guitar, keyboards); Chandos Players (strings); Robin Canter (woodwinds); Steven Severin (keyboards, electric bass); Baadgie, Budgie (marimba, drums, percussion).
Broadening the eclectically experimental landscape of 1982's Kiss in the Dream House with the occasional string arrangement and a spacious sound mix, Siouxsie and the Banshees' Geffen debut nicely bridges the gap between the band's handful of more-punk-than-pop early releases and their run of new wave, radio-friendly hits from the late '80s and early '90s. And though echoes of classic albums like Kaleidoscope and JuJu are heard in dark and menacing tracks such as "Bring Me the Head of the Preacher Man" and "Blow Your House Down," the emphasis here is on layered arrangements and pop tunes disguised as art-house production numbers ("Dazzle"); tasteful horn and keyboard parts expand the group's guitar-dominated sound and provide Siouxsie with an airy and dreamlike backdrop in which to fully display her considerable vocal talents. Siouxsie further refines things by also including a generous share of fleet and gothic-tinged pop numbers like "Belladonna," "Running Town," and the band's hit cover of "Dear Prudence." Anchored by the signature sound of Steven Severin's guitar-like bass and Budgie's exotically adept percussion work, Hyaena qualifies as one of Siouxsie and the Banshees' finest moments. ~ Stephen Cook
Although Siouxse & the Banshees had been enjoying chart success back home in England since almost the very beginning of their career in the late 70's, the group had yet to make much of an impact on the American record buying public (despite releasing such exceptional goth classics as 1980's KALEIDOSCOPE and 81's JUJU). The band's seventh release overall, 84's HYAENA, was the first Banshees release to make an impact on the U.S. charts - even though it was far from a blockbuster stateside. The band had caused quite a stir amongst their longtime diehard fans when they covered a Beatles song ("Helter Skelter") on their '83 release, NOCTURNE, and instead of trying to extinguish the conflict, they went right back in and recorded another Beatles tune, "Dear Prudence" for HYAENA. Other highlights include the orchestrated album opener, "Dazzle," as well as the tunes "We Hunger" and "Swimming Horses." Cure guitarist Robert Smith guests again with the Banshees (something he'd been doing throughout the band's career), lending his six string talents throughout HYAENA.Q (5/95, p.129) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...burst[s] with orchestra, opium and over-ambition..."

4 stars sweet sixteen
Dazzle and Swimming Horses are wonderful. Goth at its best.

4 stars strong effort that could have been brighter
This album suffers abit from hard feelings. When Smith left to concentrate on the Cure, the rest of the Banshees mixed the gtr. parts way down and covered the mixes up with keys and strings with diluted the power of much of the material, even the voicings and the rhtyhm sections are muddier sounding they usual. Whatever the reason, if you can get past the mix, there are some truly great tunes on Hyaena, some of the Banshees best in fact. While it doesn't have any of the pyschedelic feel the b-sides from this same period have, and there is little of the Smith stamp here, it's classic Banshees and it's tension upon tension to a fervored pitch. For that alone, and for the songs themselves, this is a must have.

3 stars It Could Have Been Great
Robert Smith was such a great replacement for McGeoch (who I was sad to see leave)and his work on "Dear Prudence" is stunning. Hyaena though, is a very miserable record and part of the blame goes to Robert for not seeing the production through to the end and part of it goes to the other Banshees for trying to re-create the looseness of A Kiss In the DreamHouse. Alot of the songs were created in the studio- not a good sign. However, Robert Smith and Steve Severin were attempting to make a very heavy record here but the track slection and mix-down are appalling. The strings on "Dazzle" weaken a brilliant track and "Running Town" sounds like it was mixed in a cave. I suspect Robert was treated as a hired hand here and the freedom of his other band, the Cure, caused him to neglect what could have been a brilliant moment.

3 stars Dazzling but not extraordinary
The much hyped collaboration of SATB with Robert Smith of The Cure. Given the considerable talent of both of these teams, this is a somewhat disappointing effort. This is not a bad record by any means, it just doesn't have much of Smith's stamp on it. But this is after all, a SATB record and it is a pretty good one. It would have been interesting (and exciting for fans of both) to see what a closer collaboration between Smith and the group could do. It was also Smith's last gasp of goth before his descent into pop Top 40 throwaways.

5 stars An album of unique brilliance
Hyaena is a classic record (although Dear Prudence doesn't belong on it). The best tracks are Dazzle, We Hunger, Preacher Man, and Running Town. Take Me Back and Belladonna are great, too. Some of SATB's best music is on this album. Robert Smith's guitar work is impressive on Running Town and Preacher Man, and Budgie's drumming is superb. The whole band, despite internal strife, is excellent.

Siouxsie & The Banshees: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals); John Valentine Carruthers (guitar, keyboards); Steven Severin (keyboards, bass); Budgie (drums, percussion).
Tinderbox is the most musically up-tempo of all Siouxsie and the Banshees' albums and the most stylistically consistent one since The Scream and Join Hands. Most of the selections here feature urgently rocking drumming, drivingly aggressive yet fully textured guitar playing, and masterful, gutsy singing. The songs here are intense and unfold slowly, some starting off less vigorously but becoming hard rockers further along. There is of course a fine line between consistency and lack of contrast, but this album stays firmly on the side of the former; in fact, there's a certain ...

The switch to Yet Another Banshees Guitarist in Specimen vet Jon Klein might have been seen as a cue for a time of tentative rebuilding -- the more so because another new member, cellist Martin McCarrick, was recruited at the same time. Anything but -- heralded by the spectacular "Peek-A-Boo," interpolating what sounded like the Charleston into hip-hop rhythms with a brilliant, choppy arrangement, Peepshow proved the band's best album in years. Once again showcasing ...
