You have to dig pretty deep on Supernatural to find dc Talk's Christian roots. Adopting an even more mainstream approach to making records, Jesus-pop's one-time favorite poster-boys are all over the Top 40 map on their fifth album. Listen, don't they sound a little alternative here? Is that a hip-hop beat there? And isn't that ballad pretty? Also tossing in some new age musical mysticism, classic-rock guitar crunches, and even jazzy interludes along with the usual contemporary pop conventions, dc Talk have just about every format covered here. ~ Michael Gallucci You have to dig pretty deep on Supernatural to find dc Talk's Christian roots. Maybe if they stuck with just one genre, they could have perfected it rather than projecting the desperately airplay-hungry image that's all over Supernatural. "Big G" and "His Son" do make a few appearances here and there, but the references are so thin, the band could just as well be praising a girlfriend, or spouting cryptic X-Files-type messages for the paranoid, and possibly spiritually devoid, masses. ~ Michael Gallucci A Christian rock band that combines melodic hard rock with a dynamic pop sensibility, touches of grunge and power-pop. Tight, distinctive harmonies and a tart, sarcastic sense of humor, as well as a lack of sanctimony set them apart from not only generic Christian rockers, but generic mainstream/MTV rock as well. Influences range from Sugar and Smashing Pumpkins to Queen and the Raspberries. 30-plus years after John Lennon proclaimed the Beatles more popular than Jesus, a generation of musicians who weren't even born at the time bring the Man Upstairs back into the conscience of the worlds' youth. DC Talk began life as a group of college friends rappin' for Jesus and developed into one of the '90s' most successful Christian rock groups. On SUPERNATURAL, they continue to expand their sound and spread their love of Jesus across the world. Mixing rock, R&B, funk, solid songcraft and a slick production typical of more secular pop vocal groups, DC Talk brings new meaning and respect to the phrase "Jesus freak." Those who want a positive message in their music but are put off by overly preachy lyrics will be impressed and pleasantly surprised by DC Talk. On first listen, the uninitiated might think this was a collection of love songs to a wife or girlfriend rather than odes to the creator. But delving deeper you discover that they are sincere in their beliefs. And rather than set out to convert the faithless, they hope that their music and conviction will be what leads others to discover their own spirituality.Rolling Stone (10/15/98, p.131) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...a likably earnest pile of heavenly jazz percussion, pogoable Green Day-like drum rolls and Nirvana-esque power chords; nods to rock royalty from Queen to Prince...and lyrics that...can be read as both sacred and secular..." | Supernatural Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Christian Music for 70s - 80s Rock Lovers As a music lover raised on Springsteen and Queen, I never really enjoyed the computer-generated sound of most Christian Rock. When my daughter introduced me to this album, my first thought was "Freddie Mercury? Is this Christian Rock?" After listening to the creative and insightful lyrics, however, I knew I had finally found a Christian Rock band that I could enjoy for the music!
The title cut is outstanding, and so is "Into Jesus" and "Since I Met You". Great rock guitar and superior vocals. For some cutting sarcasm, I really enjoyed "My Friend", a song about a former band member who made the mainstream big-time.
Their earlier album "Jesus Freak" doesn't measure up to this new standard. If you only get one DC Talk album, this is the one. Submitted by a reviewer (Warrenton, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Supernatural I have always loved dc Talk. This album is one of their best! Submitted by a reviewer (New Mexico) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Supernatural I thought it was a great CD, with great lyrics and music. Usually I don't like rock, or a whole lot of DCtalks music, but I thought this CD was really good.
